2016 Plastic Surgery Trends According To RealSelf

RealSelf.com recently released a study showing how plastic surgery trends have changed over the years and what is currently top of the list. The study was conducted by asking board-certified physicians what was most popular in 2015 and what they are expecting for 2016.

According to this study, women are now less concerned with enlarging their breasts and when they do undergo breast augmentation, they are opting for smaller implants. Nearly 40% of physicians say more of their female patients opted for smaller implants compared to patients in 2014. They also noticed an increase in breast reductions requests, primarily with teenagers.

Instead of breasts, women are more interested in augmenting their lips. This is likely due to the popularity of Kylie Jenner’s lip transformation, which left 30% of dermatologists and 43% of facial plastic surgeons saying they received a higher number of lip augmentation requests just this past year alone. This may also be due to introduction of Restylane Silk, specifically formulated for the lips, and the new 1-year indication for Juvederm XC, another popular filler for lip augmentation.

The mommy makeover has always been popular but is now taking on a whole new meaning for many patients. Not only are patients requesting tightening up the outside of the body but are now more commonly requesting vaginal rejuvenation procedures, which is projected to only increase in popularity for 2016. Media coverage on these procedures as well as the recent FDA approvals of ThermiVa and FemiLift – vaginal rejuvenation tools – likely contributed to the influx of requests.

The new year is also projected to be all about the neck with 68% of doctors (plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons and dermatologists) saying they expect more patients requesting neck lifts or chin augmentation. Many of them are likely to be men as the stigma is lifting for men who undergo plastic surgery procedures. While women have been doing these procedures for years, men are now jumping on board, with the interest in defining the jawline being most popular.

“There’s increased awareness of the neck. That’s thanks to both selfies and the development of two non-invasive procedures to target the neck: CoolMini and Kybella.” Interest in that area skyrocketed on RealSelf.com within months of the FDA approval for Kybella, which is now the third most searched brand on the site.
