Frequently Asked Questions about Facelifts

Confused by what you’ve heard about facelifts? Baffled by the options available to you? Here’s where you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about facelifts.

What is a facelift?

A facelift, technically called a rhytidectomy, is a surgery procedure in which aging signs on the face and neck are minimized. The goal with a facelift is to simply look younger and feel refreshed. Good facelifts look completely natural and not pulled.

What does a facelift entail?

While the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon makes small incisions behind the ear. Then underlying muscles and fat are lifted and repositioned to give a younger, healthy appearance. Much of the extra skin, muscle and tissue are removed in the jowl and neck area. Dr. Thompson is the only surgeon in the state to use the specific technique he uses to achieve amazing results.

Who’s a good candidate for a facelift?

There’s no set age or type for those who consider a facelift, though candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations for their surgery results. Consult a trusted facial plastic surgeon to determine if plastic surgery is right for you. Often times, patients come in seeking a full facelift and may find they are better suited for the in-office MACS-lift.

What should I look for when selecting a plastic surgeon?

Look closely at patient examples from various plastic surgeons. Get plenty of visual evidence that s surgeon can do the job you want. Also importantly, assure that any surgeon you consider is certified by medical boards such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  Make sure you feel your surgeon genuinely has your best interest at heart and that you connect with him/her on a personal level.

What kind of facelift should I get?

There are many kinds of facelifts. Consult with your plastic surgeon to see what is right for you.

How much will a facelift cost?

How long does facelift surgery take?

This depends on the extent of the procedure. Facelifts can range between two hours for small procedure to six hours for a facelift combined with some other surgery.

How long does facelift recovery take?

Some discomfort, swelling, and bruising can be expected. You can expect the swelling to go down in 10 to 14 days. If you’re getting surgery to look your best before a special event, be sure to schedule the surgery a month before.

Is getting a facelift the same as getting fillers?

Fillers are temporary measures that add volume to tissues that have deflated. Real facelifts will last for years. Sometimes, however, fillers can be used in conjunction with facelifts more maximum results.

What are the risks of getting a facelift?

If you’ve done your homework regarding your plastic surgeon, you should be safe. Facelifts, like any surgical procedures, do carry some risks, like infection or hematomas.
