The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) report an increase of hair transplant surgeries by 15% in 2015 from the prior year, which is a bigger jump than in years past.
Many men – and women – suffer from hair loss and thinning, typically due to androgenic alopecia (male/female pattern hair loss). Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition in which the male sex hormone, DHT, causes the hair follicles to miniaturize until they become completely dormant. The follicles in the back of the head are resistant to DHT, making that area a perfect donor site for hair transplant surgery.
With hair transplant surgery, a certain amount of follicles are removed from the back of the head in either a strip (FUT) or one at a time (FUE) and placed naturally into bald and thinning areas of the scalp. Because individual follicles are transplanted, the results are completely natural looking, which is largely why hair tranpslant surgery has become so popular.
Others feel the influence of male celebrities who’ve become open about receiving hair transplant surgery, such as Brian Urlacher, has had a big impact on the skyrocketing numbers.
“It’s amazing how much this number has grown in a year,” notes Susumu Takayanagi, MD, ISAPS president. “With advancements in this highly technical procedure, patients are seeing better results and choosing to do something about bald spots or thinning areas”.
Those who will be attending the upcoming ISAPS conference this month will be introduced to NeoGraft, the first FDA cleared follicular unit harvesting and implantation technology. With NeoGraft, the recovery process is much shorter and there is no linear scar left on the back of the head, like there is with the strip method.
Information was collected in 2015 internationally with a single-page questionnaire sent to approximately 35,000 plastic surgeons in the ISAPS database. Men made up 80% of the total number of hair transplant procedures performed.
