Plasma + ACell

ACell is a manufactured protein that is actually developed from the tissue of pig bladders this is chemically similar to human tissues. It is rich with naturally-occuring collagens and proteins and has been used for regenerative medical purposes for a number of years. When injected and micro-needled into the scalp in combination with plasma, it can provide a greater level of hair restoration than plasma injections alone.

ACell works by providing a "scaffolding" for the platelet-rich plasma growth factors to "wake up" hair follicles that are shrinking and producing thinner, more brittle hairs. After micro-needling the scalp, ACell “attracts” the plasma to that area of trauma to regenerate follicular growth. Together, they can also help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, stimulating the hair follicles and produce stronger, thicker hair.

Hair Injection Therapy FAQs

What is Hair Injection Therapy?

Platelets are small, disk-shaped cells within your own blood that contain several growth factors, cytokines, and proteins. The platelets induce the bodies to own natural healing response and release growth factors and many other proteins that all work together for cell repair and regeneration.

The dense concentration is extracted from a patient's own blood and has long been used in the medical community for wound and tissue healing. As the medical community has evolved through continuing research and studies, plasma is now recognized for its role as an all-natural method for skin, scalp, and hair stimulation. This regenerative method has dramatically increased in popularity in the last two years as hair restoration specialists have discovered the positive benefits it offers for many patients with thinning hair.

A recent study that outlines the benefits was conducted by a group of Korean physicians and published in Dermatologic Surgery. Read the full article below.

How is hair injection therapy for hair restoration performed?

A small amount of blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to extract the plasma from the rest of the blood. This high concentration of growth factors is utilized pre, during, and post-procedure. Our expert providers inject a portion of the plasma mixture (sometimes combined with ACell) directly under the scalp where the follicles are located. Once injected, the platelets activate localized stem cells and begin to stimulate hair growth.

Hair Injection Therapy treatments are considered completely safe and natural as you are using growth factors from your own body so there is no chance of blood infection or an adverse immune response.

How does plasma with micro-needling stimulate hair growth?

The micro-injuries created by injections trigger a natural healing response to repair damaged cells that have miniaturized, typically due to genetics and/or male sex hormones known as androgens. The injected plasma accelerates the process and degree of regeneration of the damaged tissue. When combined with plasma, ACell can provide a "scaffolding" for the plasma to further stimulate those follicles to grow.

If many follicles have miniaturized to the point of complete dormancy (complete baldness), hair transplant surgery is typically necessary for full hair restoration. NeoGraft or FUT (strip-method) hair transplant surgery. Hair transplant surgery can be done in conjunction with post-operative injection treatments to provide incredible long-term results for those with more moderate to advanced hair loss.

How many treatments are recommended?

Because hair injection therapy works well to stimulate inactive or newly implanted follicles with little to no downtime, it has become a popular treatment to restore follicular health and improve hair thinning. Hair injection therapy can also be used in conjunction with hair transplant surgery and is especially helpful for those who do not tolerate finasteride (Propecia). When adding ACell for to regenerate hair growth, treatments are recommended every 1-3 years.

What results can I expect with Hair Injection Therapy?

Hair injection therapy can stimulate hair follicles to produce longer, thicker and healthier hair fibers. While it doesn't actually regrow new hair, it works well to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles that happens with male or female pattern baldness. As mentioned above, hair transplant surgery with NeoGraft of the strip-method may be recommended to increase the actual number of hair follicles depending on your level of hair loss.

Results are typically noticeable for many candidates 3-9 months following treatment  but may take more time for noticeable improvement. Results are not guaranteed as some patients do not respond to therapy. Hair injection therapy does show great results for many and it's best to come in for a consultation to determine whether or not you are a good candidate.

Who is the ideal candidate for hair injection treatments for hair loss?

Both men and women who are experiencing hair loss are good candidates for  hair restoration with Dr. Thompson. However, the growth factors in the plasma work best when awakening follicles that only recently became dormant or are simply spending longer periods in resting phase. These hair follicles are still healthy and capable of growing hair. They could be headed to full dormancy, but they aren’t there yet. That’s why injections for hair restoration works best when the patient notices early hair loss. Clinically, this is known as androgenic alopecia.

Hair injection therapy isn’t effective for regrowing hair on areas of full baldness with long-dormant hair follicles. For these cases, surgical NeoGraft treatments at Utah Facial Plastics would be a better solution.

How effective is injection therapy for hair restoration?

Injection therapy for thinning hair should be considered as an ongoing maintenance/prevention tool . The injections first stem your hair loss. This occurs relatively quickly, followed by real hair growth after two to three months.
Because blood supply to the hair follicles is so important to hair growth and to reverse thinning,  Our providers may also advise you to add a prescription hair growth product, such as spironolactone or finasteride alongside your treatment..

How does combining ACell improve the overall results?

ACell is an FDA approved cellular regeneration product used in wound healing that has recently been added to PRP for hair restoration. At Utah Facial Plastics, we apply ACell with your plasma both through injections and microneedling to provide the most nutrients and growth factors to improve blood flow and reverse the hair follicle miniaturizing process.

ACell is rich in collagen and proteins and it provides scaffolding that triggers the formation of new blood vessels throughout the treatment area. The combination of collagen, protein, and new blood vessels improves healing in general, and in this case, the return of the hair follicles to activity.

What is recovery like after injections for hair restoration?

After your treatment with Dr. Thompson and our team, you won’t really have any recovery. If you have soreness, you can address it with over-the-counter pain medication. You can shower and wash your hair immediately. Dr. Thompson recommends waiting one or two days with typical hair maintenance such as blow-drying, curling, coloring, and the like.

What are the risks of these treatments for hair loss?

Are there any factors that would make someone ineligible for hair injection treatment?

This is a very safe and well-tolerated procedure. However, if the patient has long-standing male pattern baldness, where large areas have not been growing hair for a period of time, PRP treatments aren’t the best approach. Hair injections tend to revitalize hair follicles that are shrinking but aren’t fully dormant.

Certain conditions, such as chronic skin diseases or liver disease, can preclude a person from being eligible for  treatment, but these are quite rare. Dr. Thompson can discuss these possibilities with you during your consultation.

When can I expect to see results in my hair growth?

Our Utah Facial Plastics patients first notice a rapid decrease in hair thinning. This happens within just a couple weeks. From there, hair growth becomes noticeable in most cases in the first one to three months. This varies by the patient.
