Ear Procedures

Introduction

As dual-certified Facial Plastic Surgeons and Ear, Nose, & Throat specialists, Drs. Thompson, Henstrom, and Manning know a great deal about the functionality and design of the ears. Additional to the many procedures they’ve performed here in Utah, both have traveled on numerous medical missions to Guatemala, Ecuador, and Vietnam for 10+ years treating children with microtia, which is the under-development of the ear. Common ear procedures performed at Utah Facial Plastics include otoplasty surgery, split-lobe repair, and facelift revision repair (pixie ear).

Otoplasty (Ear Pinning Surgery)

Drs. Thompson, Henstrom, and Manning see many children, adolescents and adults concerned about their protruding ears. Many report years of bullying with cruel nicknames like “Dumbo” or “Mickey Mouse” or have parents looking to correct the problem before the bullying begins. Otoplasty, or ear-pinning surgery, can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. Even if only mildly distorted, the impact can be quite harmful. It is often desirable to consider this surgery before children start Kindergarten or first grade. By this age, the child has a personal interest in improving his/her appearance and is more motivated to comply with pre and post-operative instructions and actually look forward to the procedure.

Split Earlobe Repair

Men and women alike can suffer from split earlobes. Often caused by heavy or large dangling earrings, a split earlobe is when a tear travels from the point of piercing to the base of the earlobe. While the procedure to repair a torn earlobe is considered relatively minor, it is important to seek out the advice of a facial plastics cosmetic surgeon.
