Women, it seems, are typically the ones lining up for cosmetic surgery, but recently there has been a growing trend of men desiring to have cosmetic enhancements. Although much of the reasoning is the same for both men and women, one plastic surgeon states that men have two reasons for elective procedures: to look good, and to stay competitive in the job market. Here’s a list of the top six cosmetic procedures for men.
A blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift is often desired by men in their 30’s-50’s. This procedure treats that loose hanging eyelid skin, drooping eyelids, and bulging fat pads below the eyelids. This area can be very problematic for some men and make them look fatigued or aged. The upper eyelid lift can be done in office under local anesthesia while the lower lids typically need to be addressed under general anesthesia.
2. MACS Lift
The neck can also be a source of frustration for some men. Hanging skin around the jaw line can lead to an aged appearance. The MACS Lift or mini-facelift is performed in office without the cost of a hospital stay. Good candidates for this procedure are those that have mildly loose skin on their neck and mild to moderate jowls. This surgery also addresses midface laxity and wrinkles.
Kybella is a revolutionary injectable treatment used to diminish submental fullness or double chin. This FDA approved procedure destroys fat cells. As long as lifestyle and diet aren’t changed, the fat treated will not return. It’s suggested that patients have 2-3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart. There will be some inflammation that may take 3-4 weeks to subside. Downtime with this treatment is minimal other than slight discomfort, swelling, and bruising.
4. Submental Liposuction
Another option for the double chin area is submental liposuction. This treatment is performed to contour the neck and jowls, giving men that strong jawline that they desire. This procedure can often be done in an operating room, combined with a chin implant or facelift if there is concern about any sagging skin on the neck. If performed alone, submental liposuction can be done in office under local anesthesia. With this procedure, its suggested to plan on having 3-5 days of downtime afterwards. Bruising is to be expected, but should subside within 2 weeks.
The most defining feature on the face is the nose. Many men desire a straighter nose, dorsal bump shave, or narrowing of the nostrils to bring proportion to the rest of the face. This procedure is the most challenging facial plastic procedure, so it is important to choose a doctor that has training and expertise in this area.
6. Hair Transplant
Hair transplants are a common procedure performed on men suffering from male pattern baldness. There are a few options when it comes to hair restoration. Most procedures give good results with minimal downtime. Two options that involve hair grafting are FUE and FUT. The difference between the two is in the way the grafts are obtained. FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and is performed by follicular units being extracted one by one and then transplanted to the thinning area. The benefits of this procedure include a quick recovery time. FUE also doesn’t require an incision so there is no scar and a low risk of complications.
Most doctors prefer the FUT hair transplant method. FUT grafts are performed by dissecting a strip of hair from a more dense area on the head to transplant in the thinning area of the scalp. This procedure uses healthy tissue to maximize follicular unit growth and tends to be less expensive than FUE.
If the hair is just beginning to thin, a good option might be PRP Microneedling. This procedure uses your own blood to extract platelets that are then injected and then micro-needled into the scalp. This triggers the natural healing response to damaged cells that in turn accelerates regeneration of the damaged tissue. The PRP therapy can stimulate hair follicles to produce longer, thicker and healthier hair fibers.
Results are typically noticeable within 8 weeks, but may take as long as 6-12 months for full improvement. Its suggested to have 2 treatments spaced 4-8 weeks apart with possible follow-up treatments every 6-12 months.
