The innovative use of fat grafting during facelift surgery provides complete facial rejuvenation that can’t be accomplished with lifting alone. With the natural aging process, the skin loses laxity and volume decreases throughout the face. Traditional facelift surgery addresses sagging and wrinkles by lifting facial skin but doesn’t address the volume loss that often gives patients a sunken or gaunt appearance. By injecting the patient’s own fat, volume in the mid-face is restored and lines and wrinkles throughout the face are filled for a much more youthful, natural looking appearance.
Fat transfer is becoming increasingly popular in many procedures with plastic surgery nationwide. This popular technique involves using liposuction to remove fat from one area, such as the abdomen, thighs and buttocks, and transferring it to areas where volume has been lost or to enhance certain parts of the body. Fat transfer is often used in breast reconstruction surgery as well as cosmetic breast augmentation.
One of the reasons fat grafting has become so popular among plastic surgeons, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, is the improved process and injection techniques that have increased reliability of fat grafting.
Though popular, it’s important to choose a plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience in fat grafting. As with any cosmetic procedure, fat grafting can be overdone resulting in an unnatural appearance. A good plastic surgeon understands the unique anatomy of the face and provides excellent aesthetic judgment about how and where fat is injected.
Dr. Scott Thompson performs facelift surgery at a higher frequency than the national average and is known nationwide for natural results. Patients appreciate his aesthetic eye for detail and genuine concern for their wellness and positive outcome. As expressed by one patient at Utah Facial Plastics, “I’m SO pleased with the outcome because it took years off of my face without changing my overall look, and there are no visible scars anywhere. I didn’t want to look any differently, but rather refreshed and younger. My neck and jawline was restored, my eyes look “open”, and I look like a young woman again!” A facelift before and after video has recently been published on Dr. Thompson’s YouTube page.
Dr. Scott Thompson is dual board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He practices facial plastic surgery in three locations and five surgical centers along the Wasatch front in Utah.
