Previously known as ATX-101, Kybella is a new non-surgical injectable specifically designed to treat moderate to severe fat on the upper neck, often referred to as a “double chin”. Kybella was approved by the FDA on April 29th, 2015 and is only approved for the treatment of fat below the chin. It is not known for safe use outside of this area at this time.
How Does Kybella Work?
The Kybella treatment is revolutionary in eliminating excess fat in this area with virtually no down-time. Kybella contains deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in the body and plays a large role in managing fats. In Kybella, it works to safely break down fat cells that the body then removes through natural processes. This is completely different from traditional weight loss, where fat cells simply shrink. The fat cell breakdown with Kybella is virtually permanent, and without major dietary changes, those fat cells will not return.
The change is gradual, which for many is positive as it’s harder for others to detect any work has been done. Overtime, it will likely appear as though the patient has simply lost weight and will not be an obvious change in one’s appearance.
What To Expect With Treatment
Prior to treatment, topical numbing cream is applied to make the process as comfortable as possible. Then using the smallest needle possible, Dr. Scott Thompson or his nurse injector make approximately 10-20 tiny injections in the upper neck area in one session. By making multiple injections, the product can be distributed as evenly as possible. A total of 3-6 treatments is typically recommended in one month intervals. The number of treatments recommended will depend on the amount of fat reduction is desired.
