Botox is the “tried-and-true” neurotoxin that is most popular on the market today. It has been around the longest and works well to smooth lines and wrinkles in the face and neck. How does Botox work?
Botox is made from a neurotoxin that is produced by botulinum toxin of clostridium botulinum. People automatically hear botulinum toxin and think there’s no way Botox can actually be safe, which it totally is. The dose of botulinum is so tiny it does not have a negative effect on the human body unless administered inappropriately. When Botox is not administered properly it can actually cause ‘botulism-like symptoms’. A few of these symptoms include: vision problems, muscle weakness, trouble speaking, breathing or even swallowing. This is extremely unlikely but why we educate patients on injection safety and strongly urge individuals not to choose an injector based on cost only. Never put a price tag on safety.
Botox, and other neurotoxins, arrives from the manufacturer in a powder form. An appropriate amount of saline is required to turn the powder into an injectable liquid. Once Botox is injected into the muscle, it begins blocking nerves so the muscle cannot contract and form wrinkles in the skin. Botox does take anywhere between 7-10 days to kick in and start working completely. With consistent Botox treatments, many patients notice wrinkles soften and often disappear completely.
