Utah Facial Plastics Our skin goes through many changes as we age. Genetics is only one factor that influences how our skin looks as we get older. The sun also contributes to our aging process, as does our diet and even our tendency to frown or make certain facial expressions. Sure, there are injectables to correct wrinkles and there’s surgery to correct loose and saggy skin, but the skin needs more. This is why laser skin resurfacing is also a popular treatment.

The purpose of laser skin resurfacing is to induce dramatic cellular turnover. The treatment itself doesn’t need to be aggressive for this to happen, even a gentle fractional laser can achieve impressive results. In addition to giving the skin a healthy new foundation, laser treatment can also kick-start a new production of collagen and elastin. Still, there are things that can be done to keep these vital proteins active in the repair of the skin. After laser skin resurfacing, it is ideal to:

  • Cinch a sunscreen habit. UV exposure is one of the primary ways we damage our skin. It’s also something we can easily control. To support healthy skin, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. It’s just about that easy, keeping in mind the need to reapply on hot, sunny days.
  • Stay hydrated. The skin is leached of moisture in so many ways, from hot showers to caffeine consumption. Drinking those 8 glasses of water a day is necessary just to keep up. To go the extra mile, drink about 80 ounces of water daily.
  • Support biological functions with diet. A healthy diet facilitates every biological function the body performs. Leafy greens and fresh fruits provide vitamins and antioxidants that are involved in preventing premature aging.
  • Lay it on thick. We don’t mean the compliments (although we do appreciate them!) and we don’t mean the pink cream Grandma used. We mean to lay on the medical-grade skincare. Taking care of the skin is about more than washing and more than moisturizing. It is about understanding what your skin’s unique needs are and using serums, creams, and other products that meet them.
