Juvederm Ultra XC received approval by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) on October 1st, 2015 for injection into the lips and perioral area in adults over 21. Juvederm Ultra XC is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that instantly augments the lips with proven results up to one year following treatment.
Juvederm formulations were first approved by the FDA in 2006, and have been incredibly popular for many areas of the face ever since. The most common area is the folds around the mouth (nasolabial folds). Juvederm Voluma was then introduced specifically for mid-face volume loss in 2013 and now Juvederm Ultra XC has an added indication for lip augmentation. While it has been used in the lips by many physicians prior to FDA approval, it is no longer considered an “off-label” use for Juvederm Ultra XC.
“Providing physicians and patients with premium products that allow them to achieve the aesthetic results they want is always our goal,” said Philippe Schaison, Executive Vice President & President of Allergan Medical, pharmaceutical company that manufactures the Juvederm line. “Providing physicians and patients with premium products that allow them to achieve the aesthetic results they want is always our goal. Understanding that the desire with lip augmentation is to achieve a natural-looking and lasting result, we continued our research of Juvederm Ultra XC for the lips. With this approval, Juvederm Ultra XC is now the only filler that is approved to last up to one year in the lips while providing natural-looking results.”
Allergan conducted a clinical trial in which the majority of participants reported “improvement in the softness, smoothness, and natural look and feel of their lips through one year.” The nearly 80% of participants with marked improvement three months after treatment were still highly satisfied at the one year mark.
