Should You Get A Vampire Facial?

pretty womanThe title of this post likely conjures up the image of Kim Kardashian with pin point blood marks on her face from a few years back after she was treated with, what was called at the time, a “Vampire Facelift”. While this procedure doesn’t necessarily “lift” the skin like a facelift does, it does improve the texture, tone and appearance of your skin quite drastically. But is it for you?

What Is A Vampire Facial?

The term used today is micro-needling, or collagen induction therapy, with platelet rich plasma (PRP). Micro-needling involves a pen like tool with 12 tiny needles that create micro-injuries in the skin. This process induces the skins natural healing response, which stimulates collagen and elastin production for more youthful looking skin.

Different serums can be penetrated deeper into the skin during a micro-needling treatment for additional benefits. The most helpful being your body’s growth factors, which are obtained from your blood. Used pre, during and post micro-needling, your own growth factors kick the healing process into overdrive, delivering maximum results and speeding up healing time.

How Is A Vampire Facial Performed?

A small amount of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge in order to separate the PRP full of growth factors. Numbing cream is also rubbed into the skin to help make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The PRP mixture is then micro-needled into the skin as the pen glides across the face. Multiple passes are typically made with additional PRP used throughout the process with special attention made to problem areas. The skin with be bright red initially and typically lasts 1-2 days following treatment, though it can vary depending on how many passes were made during treatment.

Is A Vampire Facial Right For You?

The benefits of micro-needling with PRP include reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, enlarged pores, and acne or trauma scars as well as overall improved skin texture and tone. If these are goals you are hoping to achieve, a Vampire Facial is likely a great option for you. It’s important to keep in mind that there are other skin resurfacing methods available, such as chemical peels and a fractional CO2 laser treatment, with micro-needling falling somewhere in between as far as level of invasiveness. Some patient may prefer a more intense one-time CO2 laser treatment while many prefer a more mild series of micro-needling (2-6) treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart, that involve very minimal downtime.
