What to expect after a micro-needling treatment
- Posted on: Oct 28 2019
Micro-needling is a wonderful treatment that targets fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone and texture, reduces the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks and is safe for most skin types.
This treatment is also sometimes referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy, which involves controlled micro-injuries in the skin to induce the skin’s natural repair process. These treatments are non-invasive but there are some important aftercare steps to ensure you get the best results.
Redness and swelling is normal
Since micro-needling creates micro-injuries to the skin, redness and swelling are both completely normal. During this time, it is important that you talk to your aesthetician about different serums and moisturizers that will promote healing during this stage. Keeping the skin hydrated will help reduce redness as well. Redness can last anywhere from 24 hours to two days.
With the hundreds of micro-needle points made into the skin, pinpoint bleeding is expected. Your skin may feel tight, dry and maybe even rough a few hours after treatment. All these effects are normal and resolve on their own. Effects after micro-needling can vary depending on how aggressive the treatment was. If you’ve had micro-needling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma), you may notice that most redness, swelling, and even visible marks resolve quicker as PRP promotes healing.
The actual repair process takes place over the course of several weeks. Results continue to improve up to six month after each treatment as collagen production continues.
Direct sun exposure should be avoided during the first month while the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) is healing. Sunscreen should be applied two to three days after treatment to protect the skin while the top layer heals. We always recommend daily sunscreen application to protect against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays).
