American Society of Plastic Surgeons Supports NewBeauty’s Efforts To Educate Patients on Choosing Plastic Surgery Providers

Last month, NewBeauty Magazine published an article discussing the variables that exist in surgical training and education among the many different providers practicing plastic surgery, or cosmetic surgery, today. The article was title “Not All Doctors are the Same”.

In this article, it is explained that not all physicians who identify themselves as plastic surgeons (or cosmetic surgeons) have the same levels of education and training, which is often unknown to patients. Many doctors are board certified in other specialities and are legally allowed to perform plastic surgery procedures, though not their focus during their education and training. Their certification may not even be recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialities, the entity that oversees specialty boards in this country.

Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (both overseen by ABMS) have extensive education and training in plastic surgery. Members of these societies are also required to adhere to a Code of Ethics and are permitted to operate only in healthcare facilities that are accredited by a recognized accreditation agency. Plastic surgery training and practice encompasses aesthetic surgery (which is often referred to as “cosmetic surgery”).

While the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery responded to the article negatively, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons publicly support NewBeauty Magazine’s efforts to educate those considering plastic surgery and choosing a provider.
