The Best Treatments for Temporal Hollowing

Voluma for Temporal Hollowing by Dr. Thompson

The loss of adipose tissue (or fat) in the face is common with aging can lead to somewhat of a skeletal appearance. One common area patients experience fat lose is in the temporal area. By restoring lost volume in the temples, patients typically look more youthful overall, though others wouldn’t notice any changes. The results are subtle but can have a profound effect on ones appearance. The best treatments for temporal hollowing both involve restoring volume loss but involve different techniques.

Non-surgical treatment for temporal hollowing

The quickest, least invasive treatment for temporal hollowing is injecting the areas with either a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Voluma, or Sculptra, which is a semi-permanent that stimulates natural collagen production. Voluma can quickly be injected into the temples for instant results and lasts up to two years. It’s completely safe and natural and can be dissolved if there is any issue.

Sculptra is also an injectable and is initially absorbed by the body after treatment. But it stimulates natural collagen over a series of sessions with 3 treatments recommended on average. This treatment is semi-permanent and does typically require touch-up treatments every 1-2 years.

The surgical option, fat grafting, for temporal hollowing is done in the operating room as it is more invasive. Fat is grafted from a patients thigh or abdomen, cleaned and prepared, and then injected into the temporal areas. Not all the fat is going to “take” but whatever attaches to a blood supply is permanent with a 50-70% success average. Extra fat is injected initially by our surgeons knowing that not all of it will live.

There is approximately 1-2 weeks of swelling and mild discomfort in the temporal areas and harvest site following surgery. There is also the chance of a second procedure needing to be done 6-12 months after if the desired fullness is not achieved with one treatment.
