SLC, Ut Press Release; Dr. Scott Thompson of Utah Facial Plastics was selected by Lakeview Hospital as the 2014 physician recipient for the prestigious Frist Humanitarian Award.
Each year, Lakeview Hospital chooses one physician, one employee, and one volunteer who demonstrate extraordinary concern for the welfare and happiness of patients in the community and abroad. The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, S, a founder of HSA.
For over 10 years, Dr. Scott Thompson has been traveling abroad 2-3 times per year on humanitarian missions treating children and adolescents born with facial congenital defects, such as microtia; a congenital deformity in which one or both ears are completely missing or significantly deformed in milder cases. In countries such as Guatemala, Ecuador, and Vietnam, the stigma of a missing ear is typically a harsh social disadvantage and the lack of medical care can often break families apart.
Dr. Thompson and his colleagues from the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) and MMFC (Medical Missions For Children) are able to construct ears from patient’s own rib cartilage with monumental success. These procedures greatly impact the lives of children in helping them develop into confident, secure and responsible individuals liberated from their congenital deformities.

When presenting Dr. Thompson with the Frist Humanitarian Award, the presenter spoke for all Lakeview surgical staff by saying, “Not only is Dr. Thompson an amazing surgeon, he is also an extremely down to earth and incredible individual. He will always take the time to visit with anyone and cares so much about his patients’ well-being and satisfaction.”
Dr. Scott Thompson is dual board certified facial plastic surgeon known for his natural-looking results and meticulous skill. He lives in Northern Utah with his wife and four children and enjoys playing the piano, backpacking, basketball, gardening, and most of all, spending time with his family.
