Fat and Facial Cosmetic Procedures Popular in 2016 According to ASPS Report

ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) recently released statistics on the most popular plastic surgery procedures in 2016 with fat and facial cosmetic procedures growing the most in popularity.

According to their report, there were over 17.1 million surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the US alone. Here are the top surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in 2016.

Top 5 Surgical Cosmetic Procedures in 2016:

  1. Breast augmentation (up 4 percent from 2015)
  2. Liposuction (up 6 percent from 2015)
  3. Nose reshaping or rhinoplasty (up 2 percent from 2015)
  4. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty (up 2 percent from 2015)
  5. Facelift surgery (up 4% from 2015)

Facial cosmetic procedures continue to be very popular according to these statistics consider the last four procedures didn’t make the top 5 in 2015. The advancement in techniques and success rate of facelift, eyelid, and rhinoplasty surgery make them highly popular procedures for many. While these procedures largely address cosmetic concerns, many are for functional purposes as well. Rhinoplasty surgery is often important to correct breathing issues while eyelid surgery is sometimes necessary to improve vision and is therefore covered by insurance.

Fat grafting to different areas of the body has also gained a lot of traction in recent years and is one of the fasted growing trends in plastic surgery.

“One trend we are seeing with fat involves an increase in fat grafting procedures. Plastic surgeons harvest a patient’s unwanted fat from their abdomen using liposuction and then inject it to lift and rejuvenate other areas such as the face, buttock and even the breast,” reported ASPS President Dr. Debra Johnson. “Because the material injected is the patient’s own fat the results typically last longer than fillers.”

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures continue to increase in popularity as well.

Top 5 Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures in 2016:

  1. Botox (up 4% from 2015)
  2. Dermal fillers (up 2% from 2015)
  3. Chemical peels (up 4% from 2015)
  4. Laser hair removal (down 1% from 2015)
  5. Microdermabrasion (down 3% from 2015)

In the dermal filler category, the two types that showed an increase in 2016 were fat injections and hyaluronic acid fillers only.
