Consultation for Forehead Reduction
To determine how best to accomplish each patients goals, it’s important to come in for a consultation. Dr. Thompson can then discuss the options and recommend how far would be best to lower the hairline. He typically images each patients photos so together they can evaluate the planned outcome and make sure both patient and doctor are on the same page prior to surgery.
2 Procedures To Lower The Hair Line
As long as a patient has proper elasticity of the scalp, a forehead reduction procedure is very low-risk with a high success rate. This can be done by making an incisions along the hairline and bringing it down or by filling in the frontal area with hair from the back of the head with a small hair transplant surgery session. Sometimes a combination of both is recommended by Dr. Thompson for maximum results. Typically the amount of follicles to transplant is very low in such cases and the graft procedure is performed once the surgical incision has fully healed.
Recovery Process
When undergoing a forehead reduction procedure by surgically having the scalp lowered, there is typically some bruising and swelling that can last for 3-7 days. Ice on the forehead is recommended as well as sleeping elevated for a few nights following surgery. Medications are given to prevent infection, help reduce swelling, and manage pain. Most patients are doing well by day 3 or 4 and may even be able to cover the incision if their hair is long enough. The sutures are removed one week following surgery. The incision fades a lot in 3 weeks but continues to fade for 6 to 12 months following surgery and become nearly impossible for others to see with how it’s healed and where it is within the hairline.
With hair transplant surgery, there is a small incision in the back of the head hidden within the hair that takes approximately one week to heal. Small scabs form where grafts were transplanted and come off between 7 and 10 days. The hair typically falls out with the scabs but begins to grow around 3-6 months later.
