Popular Treatments for Hair Restoration with Utah Hair MD
What treatments are available for hair restoration?
We have everything from prescription medications that reduce the rate of hair loss, or even in some cases, help hair to come back, to surgical techniques. The main stay of pharmacological therapy is finasteride, commonly known as Propecia, and minoxidyl, which is commonly known as Rogaine. Those medications have a huge body of research in their favor that they help to prevent hair loss and can help people grow more hair.
A more recent technology is called PRP or Platelet-Rich-Plasma and that’s a fairly new technology but it really has a lot of promise and a fair amount of research behind it. And then we get into the surgical techniques where we’re transplanting hair. And that’s typically taking hair from the back and dividing it into individual units, and moving it to the front. There are two basic methods that are used. There’s the strip method, where we take a strip of hair and cut it into individual hair follicles and transplant them or the FUE, follicular unit extraction method, where a section of the back of the head is shaved and individual follicles are removed and transplanted to the front.
How popular are surgical hair restoration procedures?
Hair restoration procedures are becoming increasingly popular partly because of increased visibility or publicity of hair transplant techniques and also a huge amount of technology that has revolutionized this field.
Why is there less stigma attached with hair transplant surgery?
I think hair transplant surgery is just like any other cosmetic surgery. Botox and fillers used to have a stigma against them, facelifts used to have more of a stigma against them, but there’s just a lot more research and education out there and information online to learn about things. There are natural techniques and natural results so that reduces a lot of the stigma. Someone can have a procedure done and they get a result that looks like they didn’t have a procedure done and that’s very attractive.
