How Well Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?

PRP Hair Restoration is performed by drawing a patients blood and then spinning it in a centrifuge to extract the growth factors that are then injected under the scalp to help regenerate hair growth. Follicles that are in the miniaturization phase start to produce thinner hairs that easily break. The platelets from a patients blood can stimulate those follicles to produce thicker hair at a faster rate. For follicles that have gone completely dormant and are no longer producing hair, PRP will not help regenerate growth and the only way to bring back hair is via hair transplant surgery.

It’s recommended that patients under go 3-4 treatments spaced one month apart with another treatment 3 months after the last. Touch-ups will typically be needed every 6-12 months but will vary with each patient. The process is relatively quick with treatments taking approximately 20 minutes in-office.

PRP hair restoration works but it’s not a straight forward science. We let patients know, after analyzing outcomes and data, that typically one-third of patients have a great result, one-third notice modest improvement, and one-third notice no improvement at all. It’s important to know this before under-going treatment to determine whether or not this is right for you. The chance of success is also higher if there is no underlying causes for continued hair damage, such as thyroid or hormonal issues, or if a patient with male or female pattern baldness is on finasteride, a medication that blocks the hormone that causes follicles to shrink.
