Lip Augmentation – Fillers and Injectables

Introduction

Full lips are a hallmark of youth, beauty, and overall appeal. Lip size is largely an inherited trait with some born with full lips and others inheriting smaller, thinner lips. And unfortunately, everyone loses volume and definition of the lips as they age.

The lips are a detailed three-dimensional structure, and any lip enlargement must preserve proper lip proportions. Our injectors perform a comprehensive anatomic analysis on each patient with emphasis on individualized treatment of “deficient” areas to achieve the most pleasing, natural results. Utah Facial Plastics offers the full complement of treatments – from non-surgical, temporary enlargement with fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm Ultra®, Juvederm Ultra Plus®, Juvederm Volbella®, and Restylane Kysse®, to more permanent surgical options such as fat-injections.

FACIAL BALANCING WITH FILLER

Patients appreciate that our injectors tend to start with a conservative amount of lip filler, let the patient wait for the swelling to go down, and then recommend coming back for a touch-up if they’d like more fullness. Syringes can be purchased in a .55 ml or 1 ml amount. Recommendations can be made by your provider on whether you need a half syringe or full syringe. If you have any products leftover in your full syringe, our nurses will help guide you on other areas it can be placed. 1 ml syringe is only a fifth of a teaspoon, so it may easily be used in fines lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lip augmentation is most commonly performed using a topical anesthetic that is put on the lips approximately 20 minutes prior to treatment. A small needle is inserted directly into the lips for and the filler material is placed in appropriate locations. Some benefits of this procedure are:

  • Restores volume lost with age
  • Enhances smaller, thinner lips
  • Multiple options for treatment
  • Minimal down time
  • Natural looking results

The cost depends on the filler recommended. Once a syringe is purchased, there are no additional charges to come back for more if not all of it is used at the initial treatment. Cost ranges from $500 to $750 on average and patients can receive discounts through the ALLE or ASPIRE  rewards programs depending on the product you receive. Our membership programs are the best way to maximize your benefits saving at all times within the office and can be combined with Alle or Aspire rewards.  We also offer occasional specials that sometimes include discounts on lip augmentation. See our current specials here.

The most common product used is Juvederm, because of it’s smooth consistency. It’s also water soluble and plumps in the lips for a beautiful result. The most commonly used Juvederm products for lip augmentation include:

Juvederm Ultra

  • 1.0 mL syringe of hyaluronic acid
  • Lasts approximately 9-12 months
  • Average fullness

Juvederm Ultra Plus

  • 1.0 mL syringe that is a thicker formulation of hyaluronic acid

Juvederm Volbella

  • 0.5 mL syringe that is a thinner formulation of Juvederm providing more of a subtle plump (baby lip plump)
  • Lasts 1 year
  • Also commonly used for lines around the lips or smoker’s lines

Restylane Kysse

  • Another popular choice by our injectors
  • 1.0 mL syringe of hyaluronic acid
  • Lasts approximately 9-12 months
  • Average fullness

Other options your injector may discuss with you include Restylane,  Juvederm Vollure and Juvederm Voluma. It is best to trust the recommendation of your injector based on your anatomy, wants, and goals.

Patients can expect mild swelling and sometimes bruising associated with lip augmentation. This typically subsides within 2-7 days following treatment, although normal activities can be resumed immediately.

To help minimize bruising, it’s recommended that patients avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E and Fish Oil 3-5 days prior to treatment. It helps to avoid alcohol 2-3 days before and after treatment as well. Immediately after treatment, we provide patients with a reusable ice pack and recommend icing the lips for an hour or two following lip augmentation.
