When I (Dr. Scott Thompson) entered medical school, my intention was to pursue a specialty in public health and preventive medicine. I am clearly far from that field now, as I found a passion for facial plastic and reconstructive surgery during the course of my education. However, my desire to take a preventive approach continues to influence my current practice. I am convinced that preventive measures including protection against sun exposure, avoidance of tobacco, conscientious skin care, and periodic Botox® and skin peels, as necessary, can make a dramatic difference in the aging process.

Inevitably however, age and gravity take their toll, and I find great satisfaction as I help patients to understand various surgical and non-surgical options for maintaining their appearance. As a facial plastic surgeon, I trained exclusively in facial and head and neck procedures before further specializing in facial cosmetic surgery at one of the most prestigious fellowship programs in the world. I enjoy my work immensely and am acutely aware that facial appearance can significantly impact interactions with others, individual self confidence, and overall quality of life.

As I have interacted with patients over the years, I have found that some are unhappy with a very specific feature that they feel detracts from their appearance, while others are frustrated by generalized changes that occur with aging. As our society has gained further understanding of the importance of personal health, diet, and fitness, the benefit has been an ever-increasing population that, although continuing to age, continues to participate and contribute in all areas of life. However, because appearance is inextricably linked with both the way we perceive ourselves and the way others perceive us, a perfectly healthy, pleasant individual can be judged as “tired,” “angry” or “old” by those with whom they interact.

Much of my satisfaction as a physician has occurred when speaking with patients after a surgical procedure and hearing statements such as “People keep telling me how great I look, but they can’t figure out what is different” or “I’m so happy with my nose that I just don’t think about it anymore” or “I interact with the public in my work and I’m treated so differently by strangers now that they don’t think I’m angry anymore.”

As someone who truly enjoys interacting with and helping people, my commitment to you is to listen to your individual concerns and desires, assist you in understanding various treatment options, provide comprehensive and individualized recommendations, and support you through the entire process of initial consultation to last postoperative visit.
