Contour Laser TRL: Deep Resurfacing Treatment
Contour TRL is an Erbium Yag laser treatment that resurfaces multiple layers of aging and damaged skin. Laser resurfacing is a great non-surgical option to addressing skin concerns such as lines, wrinkles, crepey skin, pigmentation, and dull skin. Contour TRL is more of a deep resurfacing treatment, although each can be fine-tuned from light to deep depending on the patient’s skin type and condition.
The Contour TRL (Tunable Resurfacing Laser) platform gives us great flexibility for the treatments we can offer our patients at UFP Aesthetics.
Contour TRL provides a deeper resurfacing treatment for more advanced skin conditions and aging. Skin may feel raw and have some oozing and drainage. Some patients report burning and itching, which will go away. Recovery will last up to a week, varying per individual. An ablative post care regimen will be discussed following your treatment and will need to be done during the week of healing. Contour is not safe for all skin types, so it is best to consult with the provider ahead of time. Contour Laser TRL or Halo are often times combined with facelift procedures for an overall aesthetic improvement.
WHAT DOES CONTOUR TRL LASER TREAT?
There is more of a recovery process with Contour TRL. It is best for patients who have moderate signs of aging and sun damage. Also those who are looking for more of an aggressive, one time treatment. Contour TRL helps to treat:
- Dull and rough texture
- Moderate the deeper lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Brown spots and uneven tone
- Acne scarring or superficial scarring
- Pore size and other textural contours

Following consultation, you will be given some pre and post care instructions. It is important to follow directions and prepare your skin for the non-surgically invasive treatment. The day of treatment the skin will be cleansed, and a topical numbing cream will be applied. After 1 hour of numbing, the topical is removed and eye shields are placed for the treatment to begin. The laser hand piece guides across the skin, ablating layers of skin. It is somewhat uncomfortable, but tolerable. The treatment itself is about 20-30 minutes.
No. We give patients medications for calming purposes and topical numbing cream. Pronox can also be used, and self-administered during the treatment.
Contour TRL is done by a Nurse Practitioner or Physician at Utah Facial Plastics. We have multiple providers on hand that are trained to administer this treatment and adjust depths based on individual skin concerns.
There are a few side effects and recovery can be difficult for some. It is not painful, just uncomfortable. Swelling, redness, oozing, itching, and flaking are common. Patients tend to look somewhat like a “burn victim” and this is all normal. The damaged skin is removed, and new skin is forming. It is important to understand that there is a process and it takes time.
With Contour TRL being our more aggressive treatment, it is comparable to a CO2 treatment but newer technology and more controlled. Patients can expect redness, swelling, oozing, and flaking for 1 week. After 1 week the skin will turn pink and some swelling may still be present. It is important to follow post care protocol and understand that the skin is regenerating and takes time to completely heal. Most patients feel best at 2-3 months and at that point new collagen is forming. Sunscreen application daily is important to protect the skin while its healing and to maintain the investment.
Laser resurfacing offers permanent results, as your treatment removes several layers of skin and stimulates new skin. It is important to live a healthy lifestyle and use proper skin protection to help maintain the results. As we continue to age, collagen and elastin break down so maintenance skin treatments may be needed down the road.
