Ready to Reveal Healthier, Younger Looking Skin?
Contour TRL represents the next generation of ablative laser skin resurfacing, combining dramatic skin renewal with an unmatched level of precision and customization. Its advanced tunable technology allows our laser specialists to treat damaged skin layer by layer, tailoring the depth of resurfacing to your unique skin and goals. Compared to traditional CO₂ laser resurfacing, Contour TRL provides greater control over treatment while minimizing unnecessary thermal damage to surrounding tissue. The result is powerful improvement in wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and discoloration, revealing smoother, healthier, more radiant skin.
The Contour TRL treatment is offered at our Draper location with DNP, Katy Larson and our surgeons.

What Is the Contour TRL Laser?
Contour TRL (Tunable Resurfacing Laser) is an advanced Erbium:YAG (Er:YAG) laser that resurfaces the skin by precisely removing damaged outer layers, prompting the body to generate fresh, healthy skin and new collagen. Because the platform is tunable, your provider can dial treatment from light to deep in the same technology, giving us real flexibility to match the treatment to your skin rather than the other way around. Contour TRL is typically used as a deeper resurfacing treatment for more advanced skin concerns and visible aging.

Erbium vs. CO2 Laser: Which resurfacing laser is right for you?
If you've explored laser resurfacing, you've probably seen both Erbium and CO₂ lasers. While both renew the skin by removing damaged tissue and stimulating collagen, Contour TRL's advanced Erbium technology offers greater precision, less thermal damage, shorter downtime, and a lower risk of pigment changes than traditional CO₂ resurfacing.
What's the actual difference between Erbium & C02?
Erbium is the more precise, targeted technology. Our Contour TRL uses a 2,940 nm wavelength that your skin's water absorbs almost instantly, so the energy does its work exactly where resurfacing happens, right at the surface, and then stops. That means controlled, layer-by-layer renewal with very little heat spilling into the tissue below.
A traditional CO2 laser works differently. Its longer 10,600 nm wavelength drives heat deeper and scatters it into surrounding tissue that didn't need to be treated. That extra, uncontrolled heat is largely what drives longer downtime, more prolonged redness, and a higher risk of pigment changes, without a meaningful advantage in results for most patients. In short, deeper isn't better; precise is better, and that precision is exactly what Erbium was built for.
The difference in the technology becomes a difference you can see and feel
Why Erbium, and What It Means for Your Skin
The difference in the technology becomes a difference you can see and feel. Erbium's refined approach translates into the advantages that matter most to your results and recovery.
- Less downtime. Lower residual heat generally means less prolonged swelling and redness, and a shorter, more predictable recovery.
- Precision and control. Erbium removes tissue in thin, controlled layers, so your provider can tailor depth carefully, including around delicate areas.
- A safer option for more skin tones. Because it delivers less heat, Erbium carries a lower risk of post-treatment pigment changes than traditional CO2, making it more forgiving across a broader range of skin types.
Here's the honest part, because it matters for your decision: CO2's deeper heat can drive strong collagen tightening, and in select cases of very deep wrinkles or severe sun damage some providers still favor it. Modern tunable Erbium systems like Contour TRL have largely closed that gap by adding controlled depth and coagulation. The best laser is the one matched to your skin, concerns, and recovery time, which is exactly what your consultation is for.

Erbium vs. CO2 Laser: Understanding the Difference
Not all ablative lasers are the same. Here's how the Erbium (Er:YAG) technology in our Contour TRL compares to a traditional CO2 laser, and why the difference matters for your comfort, your recovery, and your results.
| What to Look At | Our ChoiceErbium (Er:YAG): Contour TRL | CO2 Laser |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength | ✓2,940 nm, precisely tuned to your skin's water | 10,600 nm, a longer wavelength that drives heat deeper |
| How the Energy Behaves | ✓Absorbed almost entirely at the surface, so energy goes exactly where resurfacing happens | Scatters heat deeper into surrounding tissue that didn't need treating |
| Precision & Control | ✓Renews skin in thin, controlled layers your provider can fine-tune | Less control over exactly how deep the heat travels |
| Residual Heat | ✓Low, cooler and more targeted | Higher, with excess heat spreading into nearby skin |
| Typical Downtime | ✓Generally shorter and more predictable | Often longer, with more prolonged redness |
| Skin-Tone Safety | ✓Lower risk of pigment changes, so it's more forgiving across more skin tones | Higher risk of pigment changes, especially in medium-to-deep tones |
| Best Suited For | ✓Precise resurfacing with less downtime, ideal for most patients | Very deep wrinkles or severe sun damage in select cases |

What's Recovery Like After Contour TRL?
Because Contour TRL is a deeper resurfacing treatment, there is a real recovery period, most patients plan for 1-2 weeks of visible healing, though this varies per individual. In the first few days, skin may feel raw with some oozing and drainage, and some patients notice temporary burning or itching that resolves as the skin heals.
You'll follow a specific ablative post-care regimen during the healing week, which we walk through with you so you know exactly what to expect and how to care for your skin. Contour TRL and Halo are also often combined with a facelift for an overall aesthetic improvement.

Contour TRL Laser Resurfacing FAQ's
Following consultation, you will be given some pre and post care instructions. It is important to follow directions and prepare your skin for the non-surgically invasive treatment. The day of treatment the skin will be cleansed, and a topical numbing cream will be applied. After 1 hour of numbing, the topical is removed and eye shields are placed for the treatment to begin. The laser hand piece guides across the skin, ablating layers of skin. It is somewhat uncomfortable, but tolerable. The treatment itself is about 20-30 minutes.
No. We give patients medications for calming purposes and topical numbing cream. Pronox can also be used, and self-administered during the treatment.
Contour TRL is done by a Nurse Practitioner or Physician at Utah Facial Plastics. We have multiple providers on hand that are trained to administer this treatment and adjust depths based on individual skin concerns.
There are a few side effects and recovery can be difficult for some. It is not painful, just uncomfortable. Swelling, redness, oozing, itching, and flaking are common. Patients tend to look somewhat like a “burn victim” and this is all normal. The damaged skin is removed, and new skin is forming. It is important to understand that there is a process and it takes time.
With Contour TRL being our more aggressive treatment, it is comparable to a CO2 treatment but newer technology and more controlled. Patients can expect redness, swelling, oozing, and flaking for 1 week. After 1 week the skin will turn pink and some swelling may still be present. It is important to follow post care protocol and understand that the skin is regenerating and takes time to completely heal. Most patients feel best at 2-3 months and at that point new collagen is forming. Sunscreen application daily is important to protect the skin while its healing and to maintain the investment.
Laser resurfacing offers permanent results, as your treatment removes several layers of skin and stimulates new skin. It is important to live a healthy lifestyle and use proper skin protection to help maintain the results. As we continue to age, collagen and elastin break down so maintenance skin treatments may be needed down the road.
