Pollution Is The New Target in Skin Aging

We know the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays can have on a persons skin, causing premature skin aging and most concerning, skin cancer. Dr. Thompson is constantly recommending daily use of good sunscreen with zinc  and titanium oxide (physical blockers) as well as a good antioxidant with science to back it up.

Daily antioxidant application is highly important as pollution has become a major culprit in premature facial aging. Scientific findings reported at the recent 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery indicate that people need to be using topical applications of antioxidants and DNA repair enzymes in conjunction with sunscreen. At our office, we’ve always promoted the use of an pharmaceutical grade antioxidant and sunscreen together and offer 20% off the total amount when purchased in combination.

Recent data suggests that pollution “contributes to oxidative stress and, more specifically, mitochondrial oxidative stress. An interesting clinical study demonstrated that women who live in urban areas with high levels of particulate matter and pollution had a 22 percent increase in pigmented spots – lentigines – and significantly more coarse wrinkling. So it appears that pollution does contribute to the clinical signs of extrinsic skin aging” noted by Patricia Farris, MD, a clinical associate professor at Tulane University and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

She goes on to say that topical antioxidants boost the skins defense against environmentally induced oxidative stress and protects the skin from sunburn, UV-induced immunosuppression and DNA damage.

At Thompson Facial Plastics, we carry top of the line pharmaceutical grade antioxidants with full scientific evidence to back up their protective and reparative claims. Our two best selling antioxidant products are as follows.

SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a revolutionary antioxidant combination that delivers advanced environmental protection against photoaging by neutralizing free radicals that cause accelerated signs of aging. It also increases firmness and replenishes lipids to visibly reduce wrinkles. Once absorbed, this serum can’t be washed or rubbed off. It remains effective for a minimum of 72 hours, making it an excellent addition to sunscreen.

SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum contains antioxidants as well as many other age defying ingredients. This product has two different chambers that join together for protection and wrinkle repair. The first chamber (TNS Serum) contains human growth factors found in young, healthy skin. It is comprised of 110 growth factors, and the growth factors make up 93.6% of the serum. (In comparison, the highest level available at a drugstore contains 5%.)

The second chamber (APS Corrective Complex) is an antioxidant peptide serum with 7 different antioxidants. The peptides are a chain of amino acids that work to improve the tone and thickness of the skin. Alpha-Arbutin is an included skin-brightener and Aminobutyric Acid acts as the resident skin-tightener.
