Top Procedures for Eye Rejuvenation

Patient 6 years post upper eyelid surgery

The first thing people tend to notice in others is their eyes, which can often show when someone is happy, sad, tired or excited. Over time, age and genetics can lead to dark circles, bags, and/or skin laxity of both the upper and/or lower eyelids. Fortunately, there are many great options for eye rejuvenation. Here at Utah Facial Plastics, we offer both surgical and non-surgical options for a customized treatment plan for each individual patient.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Upper eyelid surgery continues to grow in popularity with both men and women as it’s a relatively simple procedure that can make one look much younger and more rejuvenated. A good candidate for this procedure typically has excess skin on the upper eyelid that causes the eyes to look tired or sad and can even obstruct ones vision if the lid hangs too low over the eye. Once the excess skin on the upper eyelids is removed, the natural fold will be visible again causing the eyes to appear more awake and refreshed.

Lower eyelid surgery is often done to address extra lower lid skin, hollowing, and/or extra fat that may need to be removed or just repositioned to create a smooth junction between the lower lids and cheek area. Upper and lower eyelid surgery are commonly done together or with additional procedures such as facelift surgery.

Tear Trough Filler

Filler is a great non-surgical option for patients with mild to moderate hollowing under the eyes or for patients who just aren’t ready for surgery. The filler we usually recommend for the under-eye area is Restylane as it tends to cause less swelling than other dermal fillers currently on the market. This filler looks and feels very natural under the eyes. Restylane under the eyes lasts approximately 9-12 months and is a hyaluronic acid based filler.

Botox

Regular Botox treatments can also be done to rejuvenate the eyes. As you can see in the above photo, this patient had an upper eyelid lift and with continued regular Botox treatments, she actually looks younger 6 years post surgery. The Botox really softened her frown lines and crows feet. Crows feet are the wrinkles around the eyes that form over time with repetitive squinting and smiling. Botox can also be used to lift the eyebrows, which we sometimes refer to as a non-surgical brow lift. This treatment can treat droopy upper eyelids effectively and only takes a few minutes.

Laser Resurfacing

A CO2 laser resurfacing treatment under the eyes is a great option to tighten fragile eyelid skin and smooth fine wrinkles. This is often done in conjunction with other treatments, such as Botox or an upper eyelid procedure. CO2 laser treatments are performed by our facial plastic surgeons only and take approximately 7-10 days to fully recover from.
