Last week, Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed the dangers of walk-in cosmetic procedures done a medical spas on an episode of the Dr. Oz Show. It’s such an important topic as consumers are often unaware of the dangers and determine where to go based on price alone. This can often end up costing you more money in the long run so you will want to listen up.
Dr. Oz said “medi-spas”, which offer both spa and cosmetic services, are increasingly popular. We definitely see more and more medical spas in SLC Utah opening often, as well as in other cities in Utah.
Women appreciate the convenience, lower cost, and discounts, but they don’t realize that there is a real lack of regulation with these types of facilities. This has resulted in severe injuries and even death in some states. Dr. Oz sent an investigative reporter undercover to six medical spas in Virginia and found that none of the facilities had a doctor on scene for the majority of the treatments.
The doctors that were affiliated with these spas only came in for a few hours a week (if that) and weren’t specialized in cosmetic procedures or plastic surgery. These doctors basically rent their names out while minimally trained staff perform sensitive laser and injection procedures on numerous amounts of unsuspecting patients.
One woman the investigator spoke to had been severely burned and suffered nerve damage after getting a botched laser facial. Another woman ended up with more dark spots all over her face after initially going in to treat just a few spots.
The 3 Cosmetic Procedures You Should Never Get Done at a Medical Spa
Dr. Oz brought plastic surgeons Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif, from E!’s new reality show, “Botched“, to discuss this problem.
Dr. Nassif reports seeing an average of 5-10 patients every month who come to him to repair botched procedures done at a medical spa. The three procedures both doctors strongly recommended not getting at a medical spa are Botox®, fillers, and laser treatments.
All three of these treatments should only be done by a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has extensive training and experience with all three of these procedures. Otherwise, you risk suffering severe burns, scarring, permanent drooping from Botox, or even blindness from botched fillers.
