Many patients that come to our practice are looking more for lip rejuvenation than lip augmentation. Lip rejuvenation can not only enhance lip size but also focuses on the lines around the outer border of the lips (vermilion border) that can appear over time. By adding a small amount of dermal filler, such as Juvederm XC, lines disappear and the lips look much more youthful.
During a complimentary consultation with either Dr. Thompson or Alfie, current medications are first discussed to avoid complications. Then the discussion turns to the patients goals and concerns regarding lip rejuvenation. Dermal filler options are discussed to determine the best plan of action.
Treatment can be done at the same time if the patient decides to proceed. A topical numbing cream is then applied to help minimize pain and discomfort. The actual treatment takes 15-30 minutes with either Dr. Thompson or Alfie. Swelling is common but typically subsides within 3-7 days following treatment. There is always a chance of bruising, which is higher if aspirin or ibuprofen has recently been taken prior to your visit. An ice pack is given immediately after your lip rejuvenation treatment to help with swelling and bruising.
For patients receiving treatment for the first time, typically half of a syringe (0.5 mL) is used to avoid over-filling. Once the swelling has settled, patients can come back for more if they’d like at no additional charge. If they are happy with their results, they can come back 6-12 months later for another treatment as that is typically how long dermal filler in the lips will last.
