Two New Hyaluronic Acid Fillers To Know About

Okay, so they aren’t exactly new as these new hyaluronic acid fillers are currently being used in Europe but will be new to the US when FDA-approved. Clinical trials are currently taking place so we’re projecting they’ll be coming down the pipeline sometime in the near future.

Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, like Juvederm and Voluma. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the skin so it’s completely safe. As we age, the level found in our skin tends to decrease, leaving us with wrinkles and folds. Research has shown that by the time we are 50, we’ve lost half of the amount we had when young. I know, it’s unfair! But luckily, hyaluronic acid binds to water like a sponge so when added back into the skin, it fills in the spaces between collagen and elastin fibers to plump it back up.

Obviously, hyaluronic much more effective as an injectable than a topical agent, though topical HA’s, such as SkinMedica’s HA5, are helpful in combination with injectables for full rejuvenation. This is why injectables are so incredibly popular. New options mean different formulations for different areas of the face.

The two latest fillers to be aware of are Volift and Volbella, both from the makers of Juvederm, Voluma, and Botox.

“Volift is a new filler that combines new molecular and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid. In Europe, they are using many fillers with blends of low and high molecular weight, and studies show increased longevity with softer correction,” says New York dermatologist Diane Madfes, MD.

Predictions are that Volift lasts longer than the current fillers, such as Juvederm. It’s a medium consistency so perfect to use in combination with Voluma, which is thicker and made for the mid-face or cheek area. Common areas for Volift use are the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It is supposed to last up to 15 months while Juvederm currently last 6-12 months. This is great news for current Juvederm fans.

The other HA filler is Volbella and is a thinner consistency. Vobella will be perfect for patients with more fine lines, such as the “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. It’s also great to combine with skin resurfacing treatments to help smooth and correct signs of aging in the skin.

We’re hoping to see these new and exciting HA options this year but no one can predict how long it will take to get FDA approval.
