Botox is becoming increasingly popular for women – and men – in their twenties. It’s speculated that social media has had a large influence on millenials and cosmetic procedures as more and more social media influencers share flawless “selfies” and are more open about getting Botox. Many twenty-something year-old’s also report wanting to start Botox treatments to prevent them from getting the lines and wrinkles they see in their mothers and grandmothers. While it works and often makes sense…here are some things you need to know before getting Botox in your 20’s.

Don’t Overdo It

Facial muscles allow us to make certain facial expressions…which is a form of natural communication. It’s important to maintain some movement but address the movement that is creating wrinkles in the skin that will become permanent over-time without the use of Botox.

Are you a squinter, a brow-raiser or a frowner? By lifting your brows often, lines will form in the forehead and deepen overtime. If squinting a lot, you’re more likely to develop “crow’s feet” lines. And if you frown a lot, you’ll likely start to see the “elevens” appear in between your brows. An expert injector will have you make these expressions to see where Botox is most needed and how little you can get away with while still getting improvement.

By weakening the right muscles, those lines will not form and become permanently etched in the skin. If you’re already seeing etched lines, Botox will help smooth them out and overtime, they will likely disappear. Too much Botox in your 20’s will leave you looking frozen and unnatural.

Don’t Choose An Injector Based on Price

While popular around the world, a successful outcome still depends mostly on the experience of the injector. You also want to make sure you see someone who will be honest about how many units will soften lines but still allow for some expression.

In general, it’s best to not choose an injector based on lowest cost or Groupon special but to look at credentials, training, and reviews from other patients. One great site to research injectors on is RealSelf.com.

Consider Other Options

In your 20’s, you may be better off spending your hard-earned dollars on chemical peels, skincare, or even fillers. Chemical peels, skin rejuvenation, and/or laser treatments help minimize wrinkles and sun-damage as well as improve skin texture and tone. Undergoing a series of treatments with touch-ups 1-2 times per year will keep your skin looking youthful.

Fillers are used to fill in lines and wrinkles, lift the mid-face, or augment the lips. It’s likely possible that a combination of treatments, used conservatively, will provide the best outcome for facial rejuvenation and wrinkle prevention. Consider a consultation before getting any treatment for help determining what will best help you meet your goals.
