Rhinoplasty Facts from Utah Facial Plastics

With the nose as the center feature of the face, rhinoplasty surgery can really make a difference in ones appearance and overall self-esteem. Often times, subtle changes can make a big impact while still looking completely natural and not “surgical”. Common requests include taking down a dorsal bump, lifting the nasal tip, narrowing the base, and changing the overall size to be more in balance with a patients facial features.

Rhinoplasty Surgery is Very Popular

Rhinoplasty procedures are performed frequently making it the 3rd most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in 2016 with nearly 225,000 surgeries performed in the US alone. Rhinoplasty surgery is the most popular facial plastic surgical procedure for both men and women.

Rhinoplasty Surgery is Often Performed with Deviated Septum Repair

Both Dr. Thompson and Dr. Henstrom perform full cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures as well as combination cases where the internal structure of the nose is repaired to improve breathing. These procedures are referred to as a septorhinoplasty, which typically involves straightening the septum. Other procedures may be required to improve a patients breathing such as turbinate reduction and spreader grafts, both helping to open the airways if necessary.

Some Rhinoplasty Procedures Can Be Done In-Office

Typical rhinoplasty surgeries that require a change in the tip of the nose as well as the bridge, need to be done in a surgical facility under general anesthesia. Minor changes can actually be done in-office under local anesthesia. Patients looking to minimally refine the tip of there nose can have their procedure done in-office, which saves on cost. A wier excision to reduce the size of the nostrils alone can also be done in the office with minimal recovery and downtime. It’s best to come in for a consultation to determine what’s best for you.

Rhinoplasty Surgery is Done “Open” or “Closed”

While “opening” up the nose sounds a little frightening, it’s most common and our surgeons are able to do more and make more changes to the nose when making an incision on the columella (front cartilage between the nostrils). An open rhinoplasty typically takes four hours in the office while a procedure that doesn’t require opening the nose (closed) is around 2.
