How long do Kybella results last?

Kybella is a non-surgical treatment option that targets fat beneath the chin…also known as the “double chin” area. Kybella involves a number of injections in a series of treatments that destroy fat cells permanently.

Kybella is made of synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in the human body and helps the body breakdown and absorb fat. After these fat cells are destroyed, fat can no longer be stored in that area. Once an individual reaches their desired result, treatment is no longer needed.

Keep in mind that not everyone is a good candidate for this treatment. An ideal candidate for Kybella is someone with little to moderate fat under the chin. Kybella can be costly if there is a more extensive amount of fat under the chin that require many treatments for full correction. In this situation, a patient may be a better candidate for submental liposuction, which comes with a one-time fee versus an individual treatment fee within in a series that can become costly.

Kybella injections work in stages. Patients can have as many as 6 treatments to achieve their desired result with 2-4 treatments being the average. Treatments are done in-office and only take about 15-20 minutes. During the first week following treatment, there is a significant amount of swelling. After the second week, there may be some mild swelling remaining that can take up to six weeks to resolve. By this time, patients can undergo another treatment and continue until their treatment plan is complete. Results will continue to improve with each treatment and won’t be noticeable until around the 4-6 week mark with each one.

Kybella was FDA approved in 2015 and is the only injectable on the market that destroys fat cells in the area under the chin. The final results achieved with Kybella are permanent, unless there is a significant amount of weight gain following treatment as every single fat cell is not generally destroyed. Aging and skin laxity can also effect your Kybella results. Kybella targets fat and does not tighten skin.
