How To Prepare for a Rhinoplasty
- Posted on: Feb 6 2020
Congratulations…you’ve scheduled your rhinoplasty with one of our top Utah plastic surgeons at Utah Facial Plastics! We’re here to assist you through your transformation and are excited for your outcome. Being well prepared for surgery can help prevent complications and maximize results. Here is some information on how to prepare for a rhinoplasty.
Approximately three to four weeks prior to your rhinoplasty we will have you come in for a pre-operative visit. During this visit you will meet with your surgeon to finalize plans and prepare for surgery. We will also discuss medications and herbal supplements that are important to stop taking two weeks before and after surgery. Important information for the day of surgery and after care will also be reviewed to ensure you’re ready for your big day.
You will want to be prepared with the following supplies prior to your procedure.
- Vitamin C
- Nasal Saline Spray
- Antibiotic Ointment (bacitracin)
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Medical Tape
- Tylenol Extra Strength
- Prescription Medications
- Arnica (oral)
Certain medications and herbal supplements that you’re taking may thin your blood and increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. It is extremely important to discuss all current medications at your pre-operative appointment to help reduce this risk.
Avoid over the counter medications that may thin your blood or contain aspirin or salicylate such as:
- Alka-Seltzer products
- Bayer products
- Midol Extra Strength
- ANY decongestant nasal sprays
Herbal Supplements to Avoid:
- Fish Oil
- Flax Seed
- Vitamin E
Alcohol and Nicotine
It is crucial that all alcohol and nicotine is stopped two weeks before and two weeks after your rhinoplasty. Alcohol use can increase the risk of bleeding, infection and swelling. Nicotine should especially be avoided because it can interfere with the healing process. It can also increase the risks of complications, such as excessive scarring, skin cell death, reduced blood flow to nose, increased risks of infection and poor surgical results. Nicotine products include cigarettes, pipe tobacco, chew, “the patch” and lozenges.
Day of surgery
You may shower and shampoo the morning of surgery. Refrain from wearing makeup, hair sprays or gels. You will want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that does not need to be pulled over the head (zipper or button up top is recommended).
