Transitioning Your Skin Care Routine from Summer to Fall

fall skin

Did you know that the weather influences your skin?  With fall in full swing, the air starts to get cooler, humidity drops and that means changes in our skin too. Overall, whether you are naturally dry, combination or have oily skin, season changes can result in drier skin.  Turning the heat on in the house can also trigger skin conditions like eczema or cause skin to become itchier.

During fall and winter, you will want to reassess your skin care routine just like you do your wardrobe. We want to educate you on how some small changes can make all the difference to keep your skin on the right track.

Moisturizer

Everyone should be using a moisturizer. Yes everyone. Even oilier skin types. If oilier skin types avoid a proper moisturizer, your skin will then in turn over produce oils to compensate for the lack of proper moisture it’s getting. Find and oil free moisturizer that will work best for your skin. Now, if you are on the drier side, you may need to bump up your moisturizer. You can go from a light to heavier moisturizer, or one particular product Utah Facial Plastics loves is Skin Ceuticals B5 Hydrating Gel. This product is great as a standalone hydrator for oilier skin types or can be used with a moisturizer for drier skin types.  It is like giving your skin a big drink of water. It’s combination of b5 and hyaluronic acid helps bring moisture to the skin, leaving your skin feeling satisfied and smooth. It would be applied first and then a heavier moisturizer would follow to lock in the hydrating B5.

Cut Back on Exfoliating

Exfoliation is good for the skin to an extent. Too much exfoliating can cause tiny cracks in the skin’s barrier which leads to dehydration and inflammation. As our skin naturally gets drier in the colder months, it is best to cut back on manual exfoliation as well and chemical exfoliants. When it comes to retinols and glycolic products, we don’t recommend stopping them entirely. Instead, you want to consider dropping the percentage of your retinol or using every other day instead of daily. You will know if you are going too hard on your skin if its constantly dry, itchy, or inflamed. Products like peel pads or manual exfoliants should only be used about once per week.

Try Using a Humidifier

Humidifiers not only help with breathing, but they can help to improve your skin as well. As humidity levels lower, it can reduce the skin’s natural barrier and result in redness, drying and flaking.  You can easily add moisture back into the air with a humidifier as soon and you switch the A.C. to heat.  Here are some of the top humidifiers rated in 2021.
