A lip lift is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed in the office under local anesthesia. A lip lift is done to remove excess skin in the area between the upper lip and nostrils (white lip). With age the lips not only lose fullness, but this area between the upper lip and nostril lengthens and for some it’s more than wanted. However, a younger individual may also have a naturally long upper lip due to genetics although this is not common. When this area becomes elongated, it causes the “red lip” area to appear small and thin. This feature can make someone appear older than their true age.
A lip lift comes with a long list of benefits, making it a popular surgery. The end result is a more youthful, well-balanced appearance. A lip lift can make the upper lip look slightly fuller because it is being lifted, however this procedure is not a replacement for volumization with filler or fat transfer. Fillers such as Juvederm and Volbella are commonly done along with a lip lift to add an appropriate amount of volume to the lips. Filler can restore volume and structure in the lips, which are both lost due to age. Adding filler to lips following a lip lift appears more natural because the upper lip is lifted back into its proper position. When filler is added to someone with an elongated upper lip will end up giving them an unwanted, overfill look.

How is a lip lift performed?
Utah Facial Plastics offers lip lift surgery in both of our Layton or Draper offices under local anesthesia. Once the area is completely numbed an incision in the shape of a bullhorn is made directly underneath the nostrils, so the thin scar is well hidden. The excess skin is carefully removed, and the incision is then closed in layers. Five days after surgery the patient will return to the office and the sutures are removed. This surgery is often done in combination with a facelift as well, for an overall aesthetically pleasing result and rejuvenated appearance.
What to expect with Recovery?
Following surgery, it is normal for patients to experience some bruising, swelling and discomfort. It has been reported by patients that the recovery process is extremely tolerable. Normal daily activity can be resumed one week after surgery and makeup can be applied on day 10. The scar can be treated with scar gel and SPF for continually improved color and texture of the scar. The incision heals very nicely and hides well under the nostrils.
