Does Botox Work If You Already Have Wrinkles?

As we age, fine lines around the eyes and forehead area start to form and become more noticeable. This can start to happen in your early 20’s. Botox is great at treating wrinkles and fine lines, but what if you already have them? Will they treat lines that are deeper?  The answer is yes! Softening and smoothing out lines is the primary purpose of Botox, and it is great for anyone at any age. Let’s discuss the type of wrinkles Botox best treats and why.

Dynamic Vs. Static Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle movements when you concentrate, scowl, squint or laugh. The most common from of dynamic lines that are formed around the eyes and forehead area.

Static wrinkles are caused by aging over time in the form of lost collagen and elastin in the skin which keeps it firm and tight. Sun, aging, environmental damage, and lifestyle habits break down collagen and elastin over time eventually leading to lines in the face. These wrinkles usually form in areas such as the corner of the mouth, nasolabial folds, chin, and cheeks. Dermal fillers are best for treating these types of lines and volume loss in the face.

Botox is best used on dynamic lines. Its primary purpose is to be injected into muscle to temporarily paralyze muscle activity. When dosed correctly and done by an experienced injector, Botox softens the muscle movement while keeping the individual looking natural.

Look For an Experienced Injector

Botox is the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatment and is administered what it feels like everywhere, but it is only meant for certain areas. When searching for an injector near you, there are a few key things to look for. First, is the facility reputable and owned and operated under a physician? Utah Facial Plastics offers top of the line facilities and highly reputable providers. Next, who is the injector and what does their experience and credentialling look like? This is important because you want a knowledgeable, experienced injector doing your Botox. Currently at UFP, we have 5 experienced nursed injectors who keep up with continued education and learning alongside our dual-board certified facial plastic surgeons.

Botox is Safe

Botox is safe when injected by someone who is a licensed well qualified medical professional with a lot of hands-on experience and training with Botox. Botox is one of the safest drugs on the market and has been FDA-approved for 20 years to temporarily treat fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox Doesn’t Last Forever

On average, Botox lasts approximately 3-4 months. Botox treatments require maintenance and to maintain results, we recommend getting treated at least 2-3 times per year. Botox not lasting forever definitely has its pros. For example, if you don’t like your results, you can expect them to slowly fade a few months following treatment. Again, to prevent you from being unsatisfied with your Botox results, it is important to see an experienced injector.

Botox Isn’t Going to Ease All Your Wrinkles

Botox is being used more and more by younger individuals to prevent lines. But if you are someone who has formed lines and is questioning doing Botox, it can be a great corrective option for reversing those signs of aging. There really is nothing quite like it.  Botox is a repetitive treatment and is something you will want to keep up with. Doing it once a year is better than never, but if you want to see formed lines soften you will need to keep up with it at least every 4 months to start to notice them fading.  Unfortunately, Botox isn’t going to ease all your wrinkles, but it is going to make them softer.

Staying hydrated, practicing good health habits, good skin care and Botox are great ways to prevent and keep wrinkles at bay.
