Utah Facial Plastic Surgeon Weighs In On Kylie Jenner’s Lip Injections

For many months, Kylie Jenner denied plastic surgery rumors attributing her much fuller lips to the artistry of makeup (insert eye roll here). To copy her look, fans resorted to more drastic at-home measures by taking the “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge’, a social media phenomenon in which youngsters would suck a shot glass to temporarily boost their pout.

But the 17-year-old reality star knew she wasn’t fooling anyone and finally confessed to having lip fillers in a recent episode of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” on the E Channel.

After being encouraged by her older sister Khloe Kardashian, Kylie told the film crew: “I have temporary lip fillers, it’s just an insecurity of mine and it’s what I wanted to do.” Kylie also opened up about how hard it is being in the spotlight as ‘everyone always picks anything apart’.

But Kylie insisted she was not lying. “I want to admit to the lips, but people are so quick to judge me on everything, so I might have tiptoed around the truth, but I didn’t lie.”

And quick to judge they are. Following her confession, multiple media sources began criticizing Kylie for resorting to plastic surgery at 17 years of age and wondering why her parents would allow her to do this. We asked prominent Utah facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Scott Thompson, to weigh in on whether or not a 17 year-old girl should undergo lip augmentation with fillers.

“To me, it’s a bit surprising that this topic is generating any interest, since minors in our society routinely undergo more significant and permanent cosmetic procedures. Otoplasty, or ear-pinning surgery, is typically recommended as early as age 7. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is not an uncommon procedure for 17 year-olds who have finished growing and who may have a nose that doesn’t blend well with their faces. Both of these procedures are much more involved than lip injections and certainly more difficult to reverse.

Conversely, lip enhancement procedures are most often performed using hyaluronic acid fillers. These fillers allow for subtle augmentation of the lips and not only are temporary (the body metabolizes the HA over a period of months), but they are reversible with hyaluronidase immediately as well. Many individuals have genetically thin lips, and a conservative and tasteful augmentation can be a subtle and pleasant change to the overall impression of the face. I generally discourage permanent surgical changes to augment the lips for a variety of reasons, and my recommendation would be no different in the case of a 17 year-old. But, conservative lip enhancement in a 17 year-old who could benefit from a bit more fullness in the lips? Go for it!”
