What Is A Lower Eyelid Skin Pinch?

Wondering what a skin pinch under the eyes is? The lower eyelids are a common area of concern patients seek treatment for as excess skin and/or fat can make one look older or more tired than they actually are. There are numerous surgical and non-surgical options for this area depending on ones facial anatomy and goal for outcome.

Crepe-iness and excess skin can begin to form under the eyes as the skin is very thin in this area. For many, a small amount of Botox can smooth the area nicely. This can be done alone or with a skin resurfacing procedure, such as a deep chemical peel or fractional CO2 laser treatment, to peel off the upper layers and reveal the smoother skin below.

What Is A Lower Eyelid Skin Pinch?

But for many, Botox isn’t enough. And skin resurfacing may be too aggressive for certain candidates. This is typically when Dr. Thompson would recommend a lower lid skin pinch. This procedure is done alone if the patient doesn’t have excess fat under the eyes as well. If under “eye bags” are a concern, Dr. Thompson would like perform a lower blepharoplasty with or without fat repositioning instead or at the same time.

How Is A Lower Lid Skin Pinch Performed?

A lower eyelid skin pinch is typically done in-office under local anesthesia. Valium can be given prior to treatment to relax the patient. Dr. Thompson then numbs the lower eyelid region and “pinches” the skin up with forseps to see where to make the incision, which is directly below the lower lashes. He then removes the excess skin and closes the incision with fine sutures that are removed 3 to 4 days following surgery. The full procedure takes approximately 45 minutes in-office.

How Long Is Lower Lid Skin Pinch Recovery?

Recovery is minimal with likely swelling that lasts 3 to 7 days following surgery. The incision heals very well within 3-4 days but will continue to fade over the course of several weeks following the procedure.

Many patients undergo a lower lid skin pinch and upper blepharoplasty in-office at the same time if excess skin of the upper lids is also a concern.
