Move Over Microdermabrasion, Hydrafacial Is Here

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the once-super-popular skin treatment, microdermabrasion, is on the decline. According to dermatologists and plastic surgeons, microdermabrasion hasn’t been nearly as popular over the last year. Microdermabrasion has been great to remove dead skin cells and brighten the skin. So why the decline?

One issue is that microdermabrasion has it’s limitations and people are wanting more dramatic, long-term results with their skincare procedures. But the biggest reason is likely that treatments for exfoliation and skin brightening are much more advanced today. There are simply better options available.

CHEMICAL PEELS

One great skin resurfacing option that has gained in popularity is the chemical peel. The great thing about chemical peels is that there are a variety of options available for different skin concerns, such as pigmentation and acne. They penetrate deeper into the skin than microdermabrasion and are not very expensive. Over 600,000 more chemical peels were performed than microdermabrasion treatments in 2017.

HYDRAFACIAL

Another big treatment that basically takes microdermabrasion to the next level is the Hydrafacial. Not only does it remove dead skin cells, but it does it in a more gentle fashion followed with glycolic and salicylic acids, among other serums, that increase turnover and tackle pigmentation. Hydrafacial utilizes a suctioning technology that is not as abrasive on the skin and then actually infuses hydrating serums back into the skin once the dead skin cells are removed.

“It has various levels of aggressiveness so you can get strong exfoliation – you can even pinpoint lips and eyes. Microdermabrasion certainly has benefits but I’d say there’s been such a great evolution in peels and treatments like the Hydrafacial, that I wouldn’t go back to it and recommend it over other options,” Dr. Heather Furnas, California plastic surgeon, reported to Allure.
