This includes the fee for surgery as well as the fees for anesthesia and facility if needing to be done in the operating room under general anesthesia. For older children and adolescents, this can often be done in-office under local anesthetic while the patient is still awake.
What Is An Otoplasty?
An otoplasty is a surgery that brings the ears closer to the head in a more natural position. Drs. Henstrom and Thompson see patients desiring this procedure who have protruding ears and have typically experienced “bullying” to various degrees. They generally become highly self-conscious of their ears and find means to cover them, such as long hair or headbands. By removing this concern with an otoplasty, patients report feeling much more confident and at-ease with their appearance.
Otoplasty surgery takes approximately 2 hours in the office or under general anesthetic in the operating room. Our surgeons tailor each procedure to each individual patients needs, which often involves removing cartilage from the back of the ear and/or creating an anti-helical fold where it’s often missing for people with protruding ears. That is the upper ear fold that points the top of the ear back and is sometimes missing at birth. The procedure is well tolerated and not difficult to have done.
The recovery from an otoplasty requires a head wrap for one week that will hold the ears in place. Sutures are removed around day 7 and the incisions need to be cleaned with antibiotic ointment applied two times per day until that time. Medications are given to prevent infection, reduce swelling, and help with the pain for a few days after surgery. The satisfaction rate is high and the risks are low with otoplasty surgery, making it one of the most popular procedures performed at Utah Facial Plastics.
