How To Get Rid of Under-Eye Bags

Under-eye bags can make a person look tired, mad, and/or older than their actual age. At Utah Facial Plastics, we offer many surgical and non-surgical options to get rid of your under-eye bags.

Non-Surgical

Filler injections can be a great non-surgical option for under-eye rejuvenation. Restylane is a dermal filler that is often used by our providers under the eyes as it causes less swelling than other hyaluronic acid fillers currently on the market today. Filler is not going to correct under-eye bags like a surgery would but will definitely improve the under-eye appearance and create a smoother junction between the lower eyelid and cheek.

Not every patient is going to be a good candidate for under-eye filler. In some cases, filler can actually make the under-eye bags worse causing them to look overfilled and very unnatural. By offering both surgical and non-surgical options, we are able to treat our patients appropriately and provide the most natural looking outcomes possible.

Surgical

Often times, surgery is the best option to get rid of those unwanted under-eye bags. There are a few surgical options that best address the under-eye bags, which include traditional lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), fat grafting or a combination of a lower blepharoplasty with fat repositioning.

The traditional lower blepharoplasty involves the removal of fat and excess skin in the under-eye area. More often than not, our doctors recommend fat repositioning as well to achieve the best results. Fat repositioning addresses the “bags under the eyes”. Under-eye bags can be hereditary or just a sign of aging. With the aging process, the tissues and muscles around the eyes begin to weaken. Fat around the eyes that used to provide support begins to drop, causing the lower eyelids to appear puffy. During this procedure, the fat bag is repositioned to the hollow to give the under-eye a more youthful appearance.

Fat grafting, also known as “fat injections” or fat transfer, is another way to treat under-eye bags, hollows and dark circles. The fat is extracted using liposuction from the thigh or abdomen areas. During this procedure, our surgeons transfer more fat than what is needed as not all the fat cells will survive. The donor fat needs to redevelop a blood supply in order to survive in the new area. Typically, about 50% of the fat will survive during this process.
