What does Botox do?
Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeauveau are all neuromodulators. They’re all very similar, just produced by different manufacturers with some slight variations. Botox, and others like its kind, work by temporarily relaxing muscle activity, not allowing the injected muscle to contract. This decreased movement allows the wrinkles to relax and soften.
What does filler do?
Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which makes them a very safe option to restore or add volume to the face as HA is naturally found in the skin. Unlike neuromodulators, filler is injected into the soft tissue under the skin. Filler is typically used to improve wrinkles, creases, augment lips or cheeks and restores volume loss in general. Filler is also used for non-surgical rhinoplasties and chin/jawline contouring.
Is there more than one type of filler?
Yes, there are many different kinds of filler with many designed for specific areas of the face. Fillers that are commonly used in our office include:
- Juvederm Ultra
- Juvederm Ultra Plus
- Juvederm Volbella
- Juvederm Voluma
- Juvederm Vollure
- Restylane
- Restylane Lyft
- Restylane Refyne/Defyne
- Sculptra
Which treatment option is best to correct wrinkles?
Neuromodulators are going to smooth wrinkles in areas where we are highly expressive, such as your forehead, glabella (lines between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet (lines around the eyes). Filler, on the other hand, is going to add volume, fill in deep lines around the mouth, or sculpt the face. Often times a combination of options is best for full correction. Every patient has different needs and concerns so it’s best to come in for a consultation to determine what is best for you.
Does treatment hurt?
Patients are always pleasantly surprised by how little discomfort they feel with Botox. We usually use a topical numbing cream for most filler treatments to ensure our patient’s experience is as comfortable as possible. Most fillers also have lidocaine in them, which also helps with discomfort.
When will I see results?
Neuromodulators do require some patience with expected results approximately 7-10 days after treatment. Results are instant with filler, thought there is some swelling that follows and typically resides within 2-10 days. Because of possible bruising and swelling, allow about two weeks to see full results.
Will people be able to tell I had anything done?
It’s important to see a knowledgeable, experienced provider for both Botox and fillers to ensure a natural result. Immediately after a Botox treatment, some patients have small bumps where injected that go away within minutes. After receiving filler, keep in mind that there is the possibility of bruising and swelling. Once you are completely healed, no one should be able to tell you have something done. Again, filler is supposed to fill in deep wrinkles and enhance your features.
How often do I need to come back?
We recommend coming back for neurotoxin treatments every 3-5 months. Filler is a little different. Sometimes patients feel like they need to come in to add or touch up certain areas, this can be 2 weeks or 6-18 months after treatment. Most fillers last anywhere from 6-24 months, so it really depends on what filler and where it was injected. Fillers used in areas with little amount of movement, such as the under-eyes, typically last longer.
