How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Ideal candidates for laser hair removal have dark hair and light skin. The laser is attracted to the dark hair because it contains the most melanin. Unfortunately, laser hair removal is not an appropriate treatment for those who were either born with darker skin or have a dark self tan. Since the laser is attracted to dark melanin, when used on darker skin the laser can get absorbed in the skin pigmentation, which can lead to skin discoloration.

Preparation for Laser Hair Removal

Before each session:

Avoid sun exposure/self tanning — Planning laser hair removal sessions around vacations or summer time is the best way to avoid over exposure and burning. If you currently have a tan, let it fade as much as possible before each treatment. We strongly recommend patients avoid sun exposure on the areas that are being treated at least 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. If you have a self tan, make sure it has faded or is completely removed prior to each session. Limiting direct sun exposure on the treated areas 2 weeks after each treatment is also advised.

Avoid tweezing, waxing and electrolysis — The laser works best when the hair follicles are actively anchored into the skin. Each of these methods disturbs the hair follicles and you may not end up with the best treatment outcome.

Avoid certain skincare products — A few days prior to treatment avoid applying alphahydroxy acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids to the areas of the body that are being treated. These products are typically used on the face and can cause irritation.

Shaving — We ask our patients that they shave all the areas that are being treated the morning of their appointment.

Cleanliness — Before each session we ask that the areas being treated are completely clean. This means removing makeup, lotions, oils and creams. Deodorant will be removed at the time of your appointment.

During your laser hair removal consultation, your master aesthetician will discuss all of information above and will go over any further questions you may have prior to treatment.
