Laser vs. Surgery: Can You Achieve Dramatic Results Without Going Under The Knife?

Laser vs. Surgery: Can You Achieve Dramatic Results Without Going Under The Knife?

At Utah Facial Plastics we offer a variety of laser resurfacing treatments that are capable of treating multiple skin concerns without the downtime that surgery requires.  A few of our most sought-after lasers include Broad Band Light Therapy (BBL), Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, and SCITON’S Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser.

Broad Band Light Therapy

BBL is very similar to IPL photofacial treatments. However, BBL is much more advanced. Both are non-invasive and non-abrasive rejuvenation treatments that treat a variety of skin concerns. The BBL handpieces use state-of-the-art technology that is able to deliver high-powered energy with very minimal pain and side effects. With this newer handpiece technology, our master aestheticians feel like they have more control of the device compared to the IPL handpiece.

Skin concerns that can be addressed using BBL Include:

  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines
  • Rosacea
  • Redness
  • Birthmarks
  • Freckles
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Skin texture
  • Broken capillaries

Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

The fractional CO2 laser treats a number of skin conditions including wrinkles, scars, pigmentation and uneven skin tone. This laser treatment is one of our most invasive laser treatments. It is best on someone that has advanced aging skin concerns or deeper acne scarring.  Recovery should be expected to last approximately 7-10 days. During this time, the damaged outer layers of skin will slough off and the skin will be very red. Once healed, the new skin will appear tighter and brighter than before. The overall appearance of skin will be noticeably clearer than before. This process can take up to a few months.

SCITON Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser

Halo uses a one-of-a-kind technology that delivers both fractional (ablative) and non-fractional(non-ablative) wavelengths to the area being treated, meaning it can treat multiple layers of the skin at once.

Following treatment is it normal to experience red, swollen, dry, flaky skin. Most of which begins to subside after 24-72 hours. The dryness and peeling will likely take an additional few days to heal. Once the skin has healed, you can expect an improvement in the tone and texture, a reduction of wrinkles and overall clearer skin. Halo can give a great resurfacing treatment in just one visit, some patients might need more.

When To Consider Surgery

Laser treatments are great options to treat mild to moderate fine lines, wrinkles, and superficial skin concerns. When there becomes a concern of jowling, skin laxity, and more severe wrinkles, surgery will most likely be the best option. There are laser treatments that are effective when it comes to firming the skin and improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, there isn’t a laser that lifts and removes excess skin that comes with genetics and age.

Laser treatments are excellent options for individuals who want to treat the skin concerns listed above. A combination of laser treatments and good skincare started sooner rather than later can prolong the need for surgery. Surgery can be considered once the skin begins to sag and lose elasticity. At this point, surgery is sometimes the best option for total facial rejuvenation.
