Why Is Lip Augmentation So Popular?

Photo 2Fuller lips are definitely a huge trend right now with more and more patients seeking out lip augmentation, typically with non-surgical fillers like Juvederm. Lip augmentation was certainly not this popular even just 3-4 years ago. So why is lip augmentation so popular now?

A recent study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery reports from a group of doctors that the lip augmentation trend is “relatively recent…a multifactorial aesthetic driven by changing demographics of both consumers and archetypes (i.e. fashion models and celebrities), the relatively low cost and safe use of numerous injectable filler agents, and the dicta of the fashion industry.”

To gather proof, they analyzed fifty years of Vogue archives looking at facial images of models of all races. What they found was no evidence of a “fuller lip” or “augmented lip” trend in previous years and decades due to the fact that there was no increase in upper and lower lip surface area.

So why is lip augmentation so popular now? You can largely thank celebrities, such as Kylie Jenner, who have massive social media followings who see the before and after photos and want the same result. The fact that the actual treatment is quite simple to undergo and economically feasible adds to the popularity of lip augmentation. Treatment typically takes approximately 20-30 minutes and with numbing cream, is relatively painless.

The number and quality of fillers available for lip augmentation today also adds to an increase in treatments. Juvederm and Restylane have been popular for natural looking lip augmentation and both brands introduced two new thinner options in the past few years that give a more subtle fullness and can be used to fill in lines and wrinkles around the lips as well.
