Full, plump lips can accentuate an individual’s youth and beauty. For the first time ever, lip augmentations have tied with nasolabial folds (parentheses lines around the mouth) for the most treated area of the face. From 2014 to 2019 lip augmentations have seen an increase of 120% among new filler patients.

Below, we talk about 4 important steps for successful lip augmentation in SLC, Draper, Layton and surrounding areas.

Determine Your Lip Augmentation Goals

During your consultation, your provider will talk to you about your lip goals. Common questions you may be asked:

  • How do you feel about the current shape of your lips?
  • Are you desiring a subtle result or more full appearance to your lips?
  • How would you describe your ideal lip augmentation outcome?

Having photos to show your provider your desired shape and fullness also helps when describing some of the questions above. However, keep in mind that your natural lip shape is unique and will not look exactly like the person in your photos. Although we take before pictures when you come in, we highly recommend taking your own before and after photos. By doing so, you are able to keep track of your own progress.

Discuss Your Medical History

Discussing your past and current medical history with your lip augmentation specialist will help minimize the risk of complications. If you are prone to cold sores, lip augmentation can oftentimes cause a flare up. If your provider knows this before treatment, a prescription medication can be discussed and called in for you. It’s also important to discuss any previous dental or medical procedures you’ve had around the mouth as well.

Research Providers Credentials & Results

Prior to your consultation, we encourage patients to look at a providers before and after photos to get an aesthetic sense of their work. It’s also important to read reviews, receive referrals, research their training and credentials and find out how long they have been treating patients.

Lip augmentation treatment begins once the topical anesthetic is applied. This sits on the lips for approximately 20 minutes to ensure the lips are numb to minimize any pain and discomfort during treatment. It is then wiped off and a small needle is inserted directly into the lips to inject the recommend lip augmentation filler.

Understand What To Expect Following Your Lip Augmentation Procedure

Your provider will walk you through the after-care process and what to expect going forward. Expect mild to moderate tenderness, swelling, firmness, bruising and some lumps/bumps. These reactions will slowly improve each day but can take up to two weeks to resolve.

What to avoid:

  • Avoid touching the treated area for several hours following treatment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, extensive heat and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours
  • Avoid applying anything to the lips that has not been sanitized for 24 hours
