What is Botox?
BOTOX is a protein serum used by physicians to treat and prevent wrinkles on the face caused by underlying muscle contraction. It is one of the best non-surgical forms of facial rejuvenation available today and is capable of producing dramatic results in a short amount of time. It’s been the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world with over 4.6 million procedures performed in 2015 alone.
What are the benefits of Botox?
In order to avoid discomfort and to allow greater precision of delivery, the physician uses a tiny needle to administer Botox to the specified facial area. Most patients remark that discomfort is minimal and lasts only briefly. Botox generally takes 2-4 days to take effect. A few benefits of this procedure are:
- Effective for treatment of:
- Forehead lines
- Vertical lines between the brows
- Lines forming at the corners of eyes
- Can assist in treatment of lines around mouth
- Easy to tolerate with minimal pain and no downtime
- Safe and effective
- Performed by all of our expert injectors at Utah Facial Plastics
The Utah Facial Plastics Difference
As facial plastic surgeons, Drs. Henstrom and Thompson have extensive experience with Botox and have been each been treating patients almost daily for 10-15 years. On top of their previous experience and education, our facial plastic surgeons personally trained our Nurse Injectors and patients love the natural results they experience with all of our providers.
Unfortunately, injectables are not highly regulated and many untrained doctors and non-physicians can easily take a weekend course prior to offering injectables, typically at a lower or discounted rate. Risks and complications from Botox typically come from an inexperienced injector. In such cases, the injectable may get a bad reputation when the problem actually lies with the injector and not the product.
It’s also important to realize that just because someone is a plastic surgeon or dermatologist, even if board certified, doesn’t necessarily mean they perform injectable treatments often. Many have a high volume of breast implant experience and less of a focus on facial fillers and Botox.
Facial volumization has become a mainstream focus in facial rejuvenation and choosing a physician that understands the different levels of tissue in the face is important. With the many different dermal fillers and injectable options on the market today, you want someone that also understands what products are best for certain areas of the face and can make appropriate recommendations based on your specific needs and concerns.
Patients also appreciate our provider’s genuine concern for their well-being and satisfaction. They are committed to ethical, caring, and honest treatment of all patients and work very hard to earn and maintain their trust.
Frequently Asked Questions
Botox works by partially blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles. The result is that the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. Untreated muscles continue to function, thus maintaining normal facial expression. This is, however, only temporary. Scientific studies have proven that the treated muscles regain full function within 3 to 6 months. A longer-term solution can be achieved surgically with the endoscopic forehead lift.
Botox has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective therapy drug since 1989 and has been used effectively as such for over 20 years. The most common side effect is bruising. Botox should not be used in pregnant women and individuals with neurological conditions.
The best candidates for Botox are men and women concerned with facial aging, typically in the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. Botox is often used in combination with dermal fillers to provide full facial rejuvenation without surgery. Learn more about our Non-Surgical Facelift page.
Younger patients often begin getting dermal fillers and/or botox injections as a way to prevent or stave off signs of aging before they worsen.
The most commonly treated areas include the vertical and horizontal forehead lines, and lines around the eyes (“crow’s feet”). Botox is also effective in preventing the development of these lines in individuals who see early signs of wrinkling. If administered judiciously, Botox can also be used to treat lines around the mouth. Botox will not improve sagging skin, damage from sun exposure, or lines not caused by muscle contraction.
No sedation or anesthetic is required and normal activities can be resumed immediately. Mild bruising occurs occasionally but can easily be covered with makeup.
Within 5-7 days you may see a marked improvement in the treated areas with continued improvement for up to 30 days. With the muscle paralyzed, the lines will soften over time with repeated use Botox. Individual results may vary.
Visible results have been shown to last anywhere from 4-6 months. Most patients feel treatments are needed at 4 month intervals but with continued use, the muscle weakens and treatment is not needed as often.
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injection, the injector numbs the area with a cold ice pack. The actual treatment typically takes about 10 minutes. Most patients are in and out of the physician’s office without downtime following BOTOX Cosmetic treatment.
Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising.
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows. Cases of faces looking “frozen” are due to misuse or overuse of Botox by the treating injector.
- are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic. See the Medication Guide for a list of ingredients in BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic.
- had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as Myobloc® or Dysport®
- have a skin infection at the planned injection site
- are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BOTOX® Cosmetic can harm your unborn baby.
- are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if BOTOX® Cosmetic passes into breast milk.
If you do not continue treatments, the moderate-to-severe frown lines between your brows will gradually return to the way they looked before treatment over time. With continued use, the muscles will get weaker over time, allowing you to extend the time period between treatments.
Yes, individual results may vary. To get the best results, it’s important to go to a doctor who is experienced in administering BOTOX in Utah. An experienced facial plastic surgeon understands facial muscles well and has the proper training to prevent complications from occurring.
Offices and medical spas that offer Botox in Utah either charge by the unit or the area. Because not all patients need the same amount of units per area, Dr. Thompson feels it’s in the best interest of the patient to charge by the number of recommended units versus an area that may be more than what they actually need. If overtreated, a patient runs the risk of looking unnatural or “frozen”. Plus, it can be hard to compare price from one facility to the next if they are charging per area as they’ll likely be using differing amounts.
At Utah Facial Plastics, the standard charge per unit is $11 but there are many ways to save. With Brilliant Distinctions, you can earn points with each treatment that can be redeemed at your next treatment.
In addition to earning Brilliant Distinctions points, you can also purchase Botox through our ONLINE STORE and earn 5% back on all of your purchases. Plus, you earn $10 just for signing up and can continue earning points by leaving reviews, referring friends, and signing up for our newsletter. All members receive a birthday coupon each year for $50 to use toward Botox or any other product and treatment offered through our online store.
Brilliant Distinctions and UFP loyalty points can also be used in combination with our monthly specials, many of which include Botox savings. Between loyalty points and specials, most patients find that 2-4 treatments per year are financially feasible.
In addition, many of our patients also sign up for our Beauty Bank program where a certain amount of money is automatically withdrawn each month so the Botox procedure is paid for by the time the patient is ready for treatment.
Keep in mind that the success of Botox and dermal filler treatments do differ and largely depends on the injector performing the treatments. Many people don’t realize how treatments can differ depending on how the Botox is mixed and of course, injected, and often make their decision based on the best price or deal. Many places promote Groupon discounts and other offers on varying sites but it’s important to do your research on the actual injector prior to purchasing coupons. During your consultation with an expert injector at Utah Facial Plastics, we will discuss your concerns, goals, and desires.
They will then examine the structures of your face, assess the quality of your skin tone and bone structure, and will make recommendations they feel will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. They will also discuss any possible risks and complications that could follow your procedure, if applicable. Information on skincare and other procedures that may enhance your overall result will be discussed as well.
They will then provide you with all the financial details on any procedure discussed at your consultation and give financing options, if applicable, and can also help facilitate the next step in the process and/or provide additional resources, such as before and after photos, articles, educational videos, etc.
Your Botox treatment can be done at the same time as your consultation if you decide to proceed after the injector determines you are a good candidate for Botox Cosmetic.
“Dr. Thompson is professional, caring and the results are awesome. I appreciate that he does the procedures himself and does not have a technician or colleague preform the applications like other plastic surgeons I have gone to. He and his staff do many things to make products affordable. Ei: rebates, product promotion certificates, and birthday perks! Very accommodating, friendly staff…Thanks!” ~ AR
