Salt Lake City, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) Local Utah plastic surgeon is working to help children born with congenital defects. You may know of Dr. Scott Thompson for his surgical work across the valley with facial plastics, with more than 10 years specializing in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. In addition to the work inside his Utah office, he travels the world helping those in need on medical missions.
Troy: Dr. Thompson and the group, Help Us Give Smiles (HUGS), go to Ecuador, Guatemala, and Vietnam each year to perform services for families in rural communities. They help people who are lacking something as basic and vital as an ear, and literally builds them a new one. How do they do it? They take a portion from a rib in the chest, shape and form it to look like an ear, then implant it underneath the skin. It’s really quite amazing. It does take time and further surgeries but in the end, all looks as it should. It truly is an incredible story.
Nadia: You know in those rural, third world countries they don’t have the healthcare. So it’s amazing he’s able to go out there and provide that.
Troy: And you know he does it all out of his time as well and funds it himself.
